This kind of had me doing this  since my last trip to the track. I run weld Pro stars when I go w/ the longer lug nuts on the stock wheel studs. Ive been running this set up since last Oct and been to the track 3-4 times this year and this is the first time anything was said.

This guy, or should say kid has done the tech inspection on my car before and said nothing then. When checking out my wheels what I think he was trying to explain to me was that not enough of my wheel stud was threaded through the lug nut. I tried to tell him that the same amount of thread is being used as w/ the stock lug nuts but its just a longer lug so not as much thread will be used. It uses about half of the threads on the longer lug nuts. He told me it was something I needed to fix before my next time at the track but it was ok for this time.

Is there anything messed up about this or is there some tech rule saying that X amount of the lug nut thread must be on the stud?

so if Ive got half of the stud going through the lug nut is that sufficient? It looks like its less b/c the lug nuts are long but there is a good amount of the thread on the nut.

Negative. Lets say the the stud is a 1/2" stud. That means, no matter how deep the lugs are, the stud must protrude thru the end of the lug nut by 1/4" (half the diameter of the stud, as Redsnk said). My dad has had this issue before as well, this is why I am aware of the rule.

damn well that sucks, looks like I'll have to get some longer studs b/c I want to run in one of the classes at FFW this year. Good thing the car is already in the shop now that makes it more easy. The lug nuts I use are 2" but I also have 2 washers that I use that came w/ the kit. I put one behind the wheel on the stud b/c If I don't the wheel rubs the brake caliper and the other goes on the front between the wheel and the lug nut to keep it from digging into the wheel b/c it sits flush on it. I assume that the total length will have to be taken into consideration so that 1/4 of the diameter of the stud is through the lug nut correct?

Haha, no...Again, its HALF the diameter of the stud used. So if the stud is 1/2" in diameter, the stud must protrude the end of the lug nut by 1/4" which is half the diameter of the stud, not 1/4 diameter...I think you know what I meant before you just mistyped it.

so if Im using a lug nut thats 2" long and a total length of 2 1/16 with the washers that are used how much of the stud has to protrude out of the end of the lug nut? I know what your saying but its still confusing.

The length of the stud is not relevent but the WIDTH is. As above, you need 1/2 of the stud WIDTH protruding past the lug nut. So what is you stud WIDTH? 1/2 of that WIDTH needs to protrude past the lug nut.

ok thanks, I dont know why it was not sinking in, I guess b/c regardless of you guys saying width I was still thinking length. So in other words it just barley has to stick out through the end of the lug nut since studs dont have that much width to begin with. I'll get it all taken care of this week coming up so when I go back to the track friday I shouldn't have any issues.

Thanks guys.

If you plan to buy new longer studs spend the $100 for ARP studs. The $15 Moroso studs require you to drill out your holes and junk. It took me about 30 mins to change all 10 studs on the front of the car, didn't even have to take the brakes off.

I know it is hard to see but you can zoom in on this pic and you can see how far out my studs stick out of the lug nuts, they stick out a good 3/4" or so.

It wont matter then. If I just ran my street rims w/the Nittos it would not matter b/c my lug nuts are closed off at the end but when you run the longer lug nuts which are needed for a different set of rims like Welds then you need to have the studs come through the end.

On my 5/8" studs I have a shoulder style lug nut, not a shank like the standard issue.

Ok I'm not for cheating or anything like that. But this a quick fix. Get some stock studs from someone and off the ends (where the lug nut starts) so they are about an inch long. Re-thread them. And then screw them into your lug nut so that they protrude and will "appear" to be legal. I used to do that A LONG time ago.
