Drift 5.0

There are some inherent problems with a 3 link setup for drifting so we're planning on going with a parallel 4 link setup. We currently have coil overs on all four corners.

The only chassis rigidity the car has right now comes from the 6-pt roll cage.

We did some research on LSD's available for the 8.8 and I'm pretty sure we're going to use a spool/mini-spool.

We do have the Mathis book and consult it quite a bit. Unfortunately though, drifting is unintuitive from both a driver's and builder's perspective.. Things like a Torque Arm that may work great on a road race car aren't suited to drifting.

Oh yeah, if anyone is in Southern California we'll be at two events tomorrow the 25th:
8am - 1pm We'll be Drifting at Willow Springs Walt James Oval Map
5pm - 9pm Passed out at the Mustang Open House hosted by Eibach Springs. Map

jeeze the firewire connection makes a huge difference i see.

Yeah, when you use USB a lot of cameras will do mpeg-4 compression that makes your video look worse. The quality of our video is much higher then you even see on youtube.com because it gets compressed down. We are planning on using our high quality video to make ipod/itunes podcasts.

Whats cool about it is you guys aren't fluffing your own feathers and showing only the good footage. You show the bad and the good, which means your really interested in people learning about the Stang as a drift car.
Keep up the good work!!

Glad you noticed that. We are putting together a recipe that we want to share with everyone out there. If we only ever show the car working 100% then we are not being honest. Between the first and last runs we did raise the rearend about 1/3" and that helped out a bit with rear traction.

Our biggest hurdle right now is steering angle and we should have the solved by the next time that we get the car onto the track.

Once we get this car sorted out and working we are going to pick up another car and see if we can convert it to drift spec in a single day then go and drift it. Should be fun.

I like the look of a no-wing hatch, so much that I just bought a wingless hatch for my '89 (too lazy to weld up holes). Here's a vid of one drifting (or just acting a fool, you be the judge)

Damn, thanks for that link... I've been wanting to do a fog light install like that for almost 4 years now... never seen one and people on here didn't agree with the idea... now that I see it, I want to do the same with mine! A la GT500 :) :nice:

Haha.. Geoff has a thing for including my first run from every event. And since I don't believe in feeling out the car it's usually a disaster :)

Please let everyone know how you increase the lock angle because right now I need to do a 5-point turn to turn the car around on regular streets. The 5.0's turning radius is just rediculous, especially with the 17x9's and 255's that like to get jiggy with the a-arms.

Looks like a good start. I think people would benefit from a little more information regarding the steering rack changes needed to get that extra angle...and also what modifications might be needed to the inner fenderwells or any strut/coilover geometry issues that need to be corrected? Looks good though...im really interested to see what happens with the new control arm design. Fox body owners have been fighting the horrible steering angle forever...not for drifting...just for daily driving. We all HATE then 5 point turn required to turn one of these suckers around! keep us posted.

You got that right, I was surprised when I first picked up the car 2 years ago and realized that I needed more space to u-turn then in my F-150.

We will be documenting all the modifications required to get steering angle.

At this point:

1. I removed the plastic steering limiters in the rack housing
2. Removed the Inner fenders (cuts weight too)
3. Used a sawzall to clean up the lip on the subframe
4. Added a 1/8" wheel spacer between the hub and wheel.
5. Switched to a 235/40R17 tire up front on a 17x8 -30mm wheel. (2000 GT)

All of these changes has resulted in maybe 5* of additional angle as the rim to control arm interference is the main issue.

Also I would not recommend removing the steering stops from the rack until you have the other issues worked out because when the wheel rubs against the control arm it can be quite violent and may damage your wheel if you are not careful.

We should have a prototype of the control arms soon and I will keep you updated.

Short update:
-I just posted a summary of how drifting is judged on our forum: www.drift50.com/forums/tech/how-drifting-judged
-We're anxiously awaiting the prototype control arms that we're having made. I think they are going to really unlock the car's potential as a drift machine.
-Eibach's been helping us sort out our spring rate and we're probably going to try their swaybars to get the car to level the car a bit faster.
-We need some power. I'm tired of seeing videos without tire smoke!
-At our last event I was concerned that the car was a bit slow on track but, Geoff showed me a video comparing our car to some of the others that were out that day and the car was on par ..on some pretty cheap tires.
-We've got our new Dunlops mounted and we're just waiting for the next track event.
