Easiest way to remove the diff?

This is my first time removing the differential from a Mustang and I just want to know the easiest way to remove it. I did a search and came up with some guides on rebuilding the trac loc/doing gears but I'm removing an 8.8 differential from my 5.0 donor car to swap in to a 4 cylinder car and I'm going to swap the 7.5" diff from the 4 cylinder to the 5.0 so the donor car can still roll.

I don't want to swap the 5.0 suspension over as I have a whole **** load of suspension stuff on the way, so I'll just leave that stuff in the GT. I just want to get these diffs swapped for now.

Thanks for the help guys :nice:

It's going to be, I think, 10 bolts total. 1 for each upper and lower control arm, 1 for each shock, and 4 for the driveshaft. Mark the correct position for the driveshaft on the differential yoke and the driveshaft if you seperate them. You will also need to unhook the brake lines. The hardest part of the swap is dragging that big chunk of metal from car to car.

Awesome, thanks alot. I read in my haynes manual about it and it just tells you how to remove the whole rear axle assembly, and that seems like way more work than I need to do. I already have the driveshaft out as I will be bolting an aluminum one up to the diff, so I guess I only need to do 6 bolts ;)

Now I'm confused. Are you talking about removing the center of the rear end or the entire thing from wheel to wheel? If you are planning on pulling the pumpkin out of the rear end then I wish you luck because it's going to be a lot of work. I'm not sure if the axle tubes are welded into the pumpkin or just pressed in. Either way it would suck to remove them.
