I know, I know another Explorer head question right? Well I've researched this but could not come up with this info. I called a few local yards in search of these GT-40's and they all say that I need to 'ID" the heads that are on it so I get the right ones. Either F67E-BA or F77E-BA. Anyone know what that means? Is that the distinction between GT-40 and GT-40P? Pls. help..
Thanks!

never heard of a F67E-BA and not sure about your second number either ....

GT40s are F1ZE-AA
GT40Ps are F77E-AA

Thx for the quick reply.. Not sure where he's getting his #'s then- Sounds like they're CLOSE, but not quite on the mark. Hmmmm weird.

EDIT: I just called another yard, and asked for the F1Ze-AA and he said I was off-

He siad they used the :
F67E-BA heads from 96-early 97,

F77E-BA heads from 97-01.

Could this just be a cross-reference to the other set of numbers you listed?

Don't know about the numbers but the P heads are not hard to identify. The spark plugs come straight out, perpindicular to the head, unlike most heads where they come out at an angle, hence having to have special headers. Good luck!

The tough part is that I need to order these online. Sounds to me like the

F67E-BA's are the GT40's,
F77E-BA's are the GT-40P's

I guess what I'm asking is if I get heads from a 97 Explorer 5.0 they're gonna be GT-40 or GT-40 P nothing else.. right??

Tim - you're right on the year Explorer/ GT40/GT40P connection; but junk yards are notorious for referencing their parts to the wrong year or even model vehicle. So just because they say they came from a 97 Explorer doesn't mean they did. That's where you run into trouble that a part number or other identifying mark will help you out of. The easiest way to tell I think is that each of those heads have casting marks on the end of them in the form of parallel lines or raised 'bars' about 1/2"-1" long. The GT40's have 3 parallel bars; the GT40P's have 4 parallel bars.
