these ad's i see really are bothering me.. i dont want to put motors in a bunch of cars because idiots belive this crap... there is no way in hell you should go anything over 7k on a oil change... even 7k i consider extreme abuse...

some of these ad's claim over 15k miles on a oil change... in that time the oil filter WILL clog up and you will be running unfiltered oil...

next time i get a car in that blew the motor because of this extended oil stuff i am going too tear it down and take pics too post on here before we send the core back in..

this is what i recomend

3k miles with regular oil for most cars and trucks...

3k with full synthetics on N/A performance cars...

2.5k with royal purple oil on power adder performance cars..

I do Mobil 1 every 5k. I would never go over 7k. Didnt they say some crap about 15k! Why? Because getting an oil change is so traumatic??? expensive??

they suggest that you follow your manufacturers recommended oil change intervals. they also only guarantee the longer life if you use one of the new Mobil 1 Extended Interval oil filters. until then they suggest doing 3-5k filter changes.

btw i go 5k miles on synthetic oil on my 98 gt and my 00 grand marquis and have never had any problems. both blow 0ppm HC and 0% CO when doing a CA loaded mode emissions test.

What, is this supposed to be your resume for the oil companies?

Mobil 1 has been capable of 15K mile oil change intervals for a number of years. True, most filters can't handle that kind of interval. Mobil is set to release the Mobil 1 Extended Performance oil filter that is capable of 15K in June.

Just for your information, why not browse the used oil analysis forum at www.bobistheoilguy.com. I would hope that people would make an informed decision based on analysis rather than listen to the age old 3K garbage that has been spewing for far too long. The lab I use is www.blackstone-labs.com. I would challenge anyone to go the typical 3,000 miles and then send in a sample. See for yourself if it actually needs to be changed.

What you are seeing is just plain old neglect, that has nothing to do with the practice of extended drain intervals. The recommendation of 3K for a full synthetic is just irresponsible and a waste of good oil. It is not like we have an infinite supply. It is a shame more people don't practice conservation of our natural resources.

Forget the filter clogging (which is true at 7k miles). The accumulated engine acid will kill the engine. I change my oil every 2k miles w/filter and have gone 100k with zero engine problems!

You must be getting your information from the same guy MikeZ28 is getting his!

Acid relating to condensation accumulation really only has a chance to build-up in cars that are used for frequent short trips, where the engine never gets the chance to fully warm up to operating temp. An example might be someone who works only a mile or two from home. There are oils that are better able to cope with that kind of situation. There are also additives like LC20 from www.lubecontrol.com which will also help. Here is a good thread or two on that very topic.

I don't believe I suggested 15K oil changes are right for everyone. A situation where a vehicle is used for frequent, short trips is one case where shorter oil change intervals would be better but, I would like to see people make an informed decision rather than just buy into the typical 3K BS. Again, this is a case where a used oil analysis will tell you what kind of contaminate levels you have which will help you in deciding on an appropriate oil change interval.

Oil changes

I work on engines that routinely go 20,000 HOURS of hard use between overhauls. Believe me when I say that oil and filter changes are the key to
longivity. Quality oil and filter pay for themselves quickly. Oil wears out slowly, but filters clog up rather quickly. The best filter is a combination of high flow and fine filtration. Contrary to popular belief, even the worst oil is wonderful by standards of 20 years ago. The filters on most automotive engines are simply too small to go much more than 3,000 normal miles. Keep the engine clean, air filter included, and you will have great results.

I don't think you can make a sweeping statement like that about filters. I do agree there are some, mostly imports that I have seen that seem rediculously small and you wonder how they get the job done at all. The Mobil 1 filters I use on the Mustang though easily go 5K without any degredation in filtration. I have seen similar results from Purolator PureOne, K&N and Motorcraft. This is based on used oil analysis. Just to add, there are filters from Amsoil for example that are rated for 12,500 miles and are routinely taken that far with good results. Mobil will be coming out with a Mobil 1 Extended Performance oil filter that is going to be rated for 15,000 miles.

Again I would point out the used oil analysis forum at www.bobistheoilguy.com. There are a lot of people putting far more than 3K on their oil filters without any troubles whatsoever.

I love these discussions. Same ones at S10forum. Someone reads someone elses bull$hit, which in turn, becomes their bull$hit, which they spew out like they did the testing themselves. If I make my sentences complicated enough, people will have to agree with my beliefs. I'll just keep changing my oil and filter........ and during your breaks, while rebuilding your engine, you can come type an arguement on why I waste my $$

I was you until the first time I had my oil analyzed. Have you ever had your oil analyzed? If not than you are just buying into oil company marketing. I will say it again, if you don't believe me, go look at the used oil analysis forum at www.bobistheoilguy.com. These are results from analysis done by professional labs. For example, I use www.blackstone-labs.com for my oil, transmission fluid, engine coolant and differential fluid.

Far be it from me to try and convince anyone to make an informed decision. If you want to continue changing your oil based on some notion that it is worn out after 3K than by all means go ahead I have given links to resources where you can find out for yourself. I just hope you remember to pull your head out of the sand long enough to breathe

Am I the only one left on Earth that uses Dino oil and changes the oil & filter every 3000 miles?

I use dino oil every 3k in my Nissan, my wife's EX250 Ninja and her Equinox. My Imperial proabably will too. However, my Triumph and the Mustang get Mobil 1.

i get my info from years of building modern muscle cars.. and from personal experence in a shop...

all of the really high mileage cars i work on ( one of them is a 1994 t-bird SC with 298,000 + miles on the original never touched motor) had oil changes every 3k miles... and all the motors on regular use cars i have had done had a rusted on oil filter and thick as axle greese oil in it... and if you look at the oil change sticker it went 10k plus since the last oil change...

i have one customer with a LT-1 camaro with over 150k miles on the original motor and he sprays on it... why does it still run... a good tune and every 2.5k it gets royal purple witch has been tested too be the best.. (GM high tech ran a article with tests years ago)

you trust your labs... i will trust the motors i have had too rebuild for people that did not change their oil...

plus what does it hurt too have nice fresh clean oil that has not been run thru many heat cycles... what is it you cant do a oil change??

i know you will respond back with the lab stuff again... but fact is every single motor i have replaced did not get regular oil changes...

i dont even know why i am writing this... i hope you get a lot of people too go 10-15k on thier oil... do me a favor convince people that own regular cars (i like mustangs too much too see them abused) and tell people from massachusetts... more money in my pocket when their motor goes...
