Those are cats. There should be four on the pipe. Def hang onto the pipe and don't let the exhaust shop keep it. 10 years ago cat pipes were throwaways to a lot of guys here....now the cats are worth some $$$ in metals.
You can drive with the air pump open. It's gonna be loud as he'll and sound like an exhaust leak
What does the exhaust shop want to do? Weld the pipe to the new h pipe?
Here is an easier way. Get a hacksaw and cut open the welded end. So now you have the open end of the pipe from the pump and the open end on the h pipe. Spray with wd-40 and slide a 3/4" peice of heater hose on both and use hose clamps. This is how many of us connect the pipes.
Some aftermarket pipes even come with the heater hose to do this. Then if you need to remove it ever, no need to cut
