OK I started the tread because of the growing need for weight loss..(For Mustangs not for you)

There are no cars that weight only 2k or less and have at leaset twice less horsepower we all have, but some how beet us in the streets????
some guys running 4cyc 200hp killing a 300hp
I know Hp dose not matter alot but i am useing it as a referance

We need to start going high tech like the rest of the guys I have seen fiberglass hoods and all and some fenders but are there any more stuff that we could use to loose all that baby fat?

You would have to buy a body from THESE GUYS and race your car at the track. If you want to get the weight down without replacing the whole body then you would half to strip the whole car except for the driver's seat and run with barely any gas, but it would never hook up and be so nose heavy in the corners you would only be to drive it at the track anyway.

The point being, these cars don't weigh a whole lot as is, and trying to reduce it can quickly convert it to a track only car. But, then you only race at the track anyway, right?

Don't worry about it so much. Pretty much any motorcycle out there can beat us in a straight line, but so what. There's always going to be something faster, but owning a Mustang is about so much more than that, whereas the speed is all they have.

I'd rather drive a 6-cyl 3-speed '65 coupe than any Civic, no matter how big a rear wing it has.

Yeah, but don't you just find it hard to resist the sound those fart cans make bolted on to those 96 HP rice burners?

I especially love how much money it costs to break the 200 HP barrier in one of those cars. The only better than the 3 tier wing in the back are the glowing neon lights from under the car. I wonder if they make those things for classic Mustangs, hmm...

I'd go with gearing. Put in an Overdrive unit. I forget the brand but it mounts in front of the rear end & can allow you to put a 4:11 rear in & still kick it down 33% for an effective 2.75 for top end. Or you can always just get nitrous.

Since you mentioned 'street' in your post well stick with streetable weight modifications.

Fiberglass: hood, fenders, trunk lid, doors (roll cage with door bars highly recommended)

Interior: Lightweight seats, remove sound deadener

Engine: aluminum heads, intake

Drivetrain: aluminum driveshaft, gear carrier

We can go on and on with ways to reduce weight but in a streetable car you're not going to get much under 2,800 lbs. Easiest way to handle lightweight import cars in a pushrod V8 domestic is traction and horsepower.

I totally agree with Stang Master. We need to be able to have everything. Displacement, technology AND the looks. I have a 66 and I will never stop working on it. Reciently a lot of really good companies like Tolal Control and Heidt's and lots of others in the last year or so came out with some great suspention products that was cool but I want everything else too. I want carbon fiber hoods and trunks as well as cosmetics like LED lights better interior......everything

Psydwaze,
That 2800 lb limit, arent you thinking Fox body?? This is the Classic Forum, so that lower limit is probably closer to 22-2300. My 65 2+2 in full street trim w/ Gas. & tool box, tiped the Fla. DOT scales @ 2700 lb.

Couple of points to make here:

1.) Leave the racing to the track, either a road course, a drag strip, or a closed parking lot with cones. Don't do it on the public roads please, for our safety and our reputation as car-guys.

2.) For every 100 pounds you remove it gains what, a tenth in the quarter mile? I say forget the diet and grow more powah! Either a bigger cam with better heads or forge the bottom end and push some booooooost. I have added some fiberglass and aluminum engine/drivetrain components, but my car still weighs about the same since I added strength and overdrive while I was at it. What I did accomplish is the weight has moved the center of gravity down and rearward, both good things in a front-engine RWD car.

3.) Never discount the added benefit of traction. Those 200hp FWD cars can scoot off the line because the majority of their weight is on the drive wheels, so add some cal-tracs or a 4-link to the rear, move your battery to the rear etc. 300hp@2800 pounds WILL beat 200hp@2100 if you can get the power to the pavement.

Edbert cummon man are you serious? Dont speed on the street? I agree that in some sercumstances it is dangerous and irresponsible, but I'm sorry speeding is why I have a Mustang. Believe me if otherwise Id have a Toyota hybrid to save gas. If you're only gonna race it on the track build a track car. I allso think your wrong about loosing the weight, we need all the help we can get, Mustangs, esspecially classics, were built to take mom to the grocerystore with kids in the back seat, ect.... I DO agree that you should work more on traction and torque but all of that is important to me.

Well you could always do what I did a year back. I was driving my Uncle's 65 GT down to the store, on the way there I passed a speed trap with a cop sitting there waiting for people to blast by, he would radio another group of cops lying in wait to have them stop the speeder while he kept radaring people. On the way back from the store, there was a beat up POS Acura with the stickers that make it that much faster which pulled up to me at the stop light. He revved, so I revved, he started acting like he wanted to race, so I acted like I wanted to race. The light turned green and he gunned it and I left at a normal pace, when I finally caught up to him, he was pulled over getting a ticket and I just politely waved to him. I didn't get to see his response, but I'm sure he was letting me know I was no.1 with the middle finger.

He sure taught me a lesson that night....

Yes, racing on public roads is just stupid.

I never said that, god knows I have a leadfoot, but speeding and racing are two different things.

The danger in street racing is usually not the guys doing the racing it is pedestrians and other drivers who are unprepared or unequipped to deal with the results. There are plenty of lawmakers ready to lower the boom on streetrods in order to gain a few votes, all we enthusiasts need is a few kids to get mowed down by some jerks who just watched Fast and Furious-IV six times in a row.

Are you saying speeding is dangerous and irresponsible but racing is okay? I'm trying to follow you here.

There are many reasons to own and love a Mustang other than the ability to break the law you know. In fact if speeding was your reason I don;t know of any car including the Toyota hybrid than cannot exceed posted limits.

Sorry I didnt realize you meant street "racing" I thought you were talking about speeding in general. Yea, lining it up is dangerous on the streets. I do it every now and then but I live in South Fla where theres 4 lanes of empty freshly paved roads. I think if people are gonna block off streets or race where people (other than themselves) can get hurt they should be shot, your right that is stupid, but if Im at a stoplight in the middle of an empty intersection at 10 at night and a Vette pulls up, Im not gonna stick my head out the window and ask him if he wants to go down to the track.....

That's good thinking, you'd be avoiding the embarhasment of having your a$$ handed to you on a plate in front of spectators.

If the dunebuggy guys can drive on the road why can't we build a tube chassis and run a fiberglass body over it on the street? I'd think as long as you were caged and had working lights, turn signals etc you'd be legal and safe. I think it would be safer than a motorcycle.

Then you would be driving a V8 dune buggy with a decorative fibreglass fascade. I like driving my mustang.
