fuel filter help / taking out console help

i just ordered a new motocraft fuel filter becuase allot of my friends cars have had fuel filter problems lately so i figured id get one along with some other crap. where is it? how do i change it is it just 2 hoses i take off and move to the new one?

also i got that stripped screw out so now i can take the center console out of my car to replace the torn shifter boot. how do i get it out, i got the 4 screws out behind the plastic but i dont get how to get it down to the tranny tunnel so i can put the lower shift boot in right.

Fuel filter is a hard line going in and a hard line going out......Just follow the lines under the car and you will see it along the rocker. And why did you have to order it they should be in stock almost anywhere. You will need to hold the filter nut with a wrench and crack the line fitting loose with another wrench (inlet and outlet of the filter)

The lower shift boot is a PITA with the center console in but it is doable. I used a flex head ratcheting wrench and took the leather shifter boot off and the 2 back bolts are easy then you will have to deal with the front 2 but it's not that bad with the right tools. I chose to take my console out the second time but didn't save any time.....but I had a chance to do a good cleaning on that area when it was out

i did it once with the console in when i installed my MGW and tore the stocker, so i got a new one of those too. this time im taking it out.

The Fuel Fiter is Easy just pull the White Clips from the Duckbill Fittings on the ends of the Filter and undo the Hose Style Clamp, I always like to stick a Vacuum Caps on the Filter so I dont get soaked with fuel, make sure there are 2 new White Clips with the new filter.

He has a Fuel Injected car. They're different.

First you need to relieve the pressure from the fuel system. Open your hood and look at the fuel line that runs down the front of the engine on the left side. You'll see a valve that looks like a tire stem with a cap on it. Remove the cap and carefully push on the little needle inside with a small screwdriver. Depending on how long it been since you started the car there will either be little to no gas come out or a decent amount. Just be careful and push on the needle slowly. Once there is no more fuel coming out replace the cap. Like U2SLO450 said, the fuel filter is under the car directly in front of the gas tank. There is a duckbill fitting that attaches the nylon fuel line to the filter at the inlet and outlet of the filter. There are white plastic locks that hold the duckbill fittings to the filter. You will need a screwdriver to pry the locks out of the duckbill fittings. After you remove the locks the fittings should just pull off of the filter. Then loosen the large hose clamp that holds the filter in place in it's bracket and remove the old filter. Next install your new filter and tighten the clamp. There should have been 2 new white plastic locks included with your new filter. Put those into the duckbill fittings and push the fittings back onto the filter. You're all done.

the 2 back bolts are easy then you will have to deal with the front 2 but it's not that bad with the right tools.

To get the front ones out, you can trim the console plastic to get better access to the bolts. When the shifter boot is snapped back on, the trimmed plastic is covered up so you can't see them. I used a Dremel tool to do the trimming.

Fuel Filter:

I have never released the pressure from the lines when changing the filter. However, each time I did it, the car sat for a few days. If you have recently driven the car, it's a good idea to release the pressure. Either way, you are still going to get some gas on you so be careful.


Interior Console:

Front:
First, remove your radio and radio plate (blue arrows). Remove the piece under your steering column (you can see it laying on the floor in the pic) and glove box. The piece under the steering column is held in by a couple small bolts. The glove box is held in by two screws on the bottom. You will now have access to the four larger screws that hold the console to the dash (white arrows). Remove those screws. Then, unplug the trunk latch and fuel door (if applicable) buttons from the back. The front of the console is also held in place by four plastic clips (located near the screws - holes can be seen in pic). If your console has never been removed, it may be hard to get them loose. Just keep playing with it.

Rear:
Carefully pry the oval shaped covers off armrest (one on each side). Remove the gold screws (two on each side). Remove arm rest. I can't remember where, but I believe there are also two screws somewhere by the armrest that hold the middle of the console in that need to be removed.

Middle:
Remove two screws that would normally be concealed by upper shifter boot. Carefully lift up the middle console because the lighter and side mirror controls will be connected. Remove those harnesses.


Just keep playing around with it until the whole thing comes loose. I only removed this to put the lower boot back in, not to take it off. Be careful not to break the thin plastic part that has to go over the shifter when installing and removing. You do not have to unscrew the heat/ac control switches. I just did it because I didn't know what I was doing. Just remove the trim piece by prying it off with your hands.

I can't remember where, but I believe there are also two screws somewhere by the armrest that hold the middle of the console in that need to be removed.

yea theres 2 screws right under the front of the armrest or delete plate, whichever one you got.

sorry to bring this thread back to life, but im getting ready to change my fuel filter as well. just wondering if anyone has any pictures of where this valve is to release the pressure from the system? or maybe even i better explanation where its located?

The following is a copy of what I posted in 2.3 tech. Should be the same for 5.0.


Changed my fuel filter today. I change it between 25000-30000. Let the car sit overnight and there was no pressure on the lines. Approximately 6 oz of fuel streamed from the hoses and the filter. I just used a pan to catch it and waited for it to drain before removing the filter all the way out. Here are a couple of pics I took. The first one is before doing anything and the second is with the hosed detached and filter removed. The clips come out easy, just use a screw driver to go under the duckbill. While prying up with the screwdriver, push the bottom of clips open with your other hand. Installation back is a breeze, just remember what the orientation of the clips were and you won't have to guess which hole what goes in Just remember do not lay directly under the filter, lay to the side or you will get gas straight in your eye when it drips down.

Very easy protection and performance keeper for less than $8 with tax.

again i appreciate your help. i just finished mine. took a matter of a few minutes. there was no pressure, just a little fuel(after only letting it sit for 3-4 hours after driving). just gotta clean the K&N filter, and the tune-up shall be complete.
