GEAR NOISE QUESTION.

Just got another Mustang the other day and the guy put in Ford 4.10's himself and when you coast or let off the gas it whines and sometimes grinds like crazy. Loud. He said he had the cover off three times and everything looked ok. Think maybe I could just reset the backlash and fix it?

It sounds like that guy or however he had install those gears didn't
know what they were doing.Their should be no noise/grinding at all.
You should have your mechanic or a driveline shop take a look at it
for you if you can't fix it yourself. Also you should fined out what condition
the bearings are in.

If you haven't installed gears or took apart a rearend before I highly
subjest that you take your car to a reputable driveline shop or a
we'll known mechanic because if the sound is coming from the rearend
that means they installed it wrong.Installing gears you have to get it
almost perfect or you will just have the noise again. It's most likely the
bearings that are screwed up not so, the ring and pinion.I have FRPP 4.10's
in my 96 GT and I took my car to a reputable driveline shop to have them
professionaly installed and I have no sounds coming from my rearend.
Pay the money and do it right the first time.

yeah he botched the install. there is a couple of nice tech articles in the sticky on gear installs. well this is what I would do if I was you

inspect the gears and see if they show signs of heat damage or any toehr mechanical damage. heat damage will look like blueish discoloration, if you don;t see any damage then replace the pinnion bearings and carrier bearings and resetup the pinion depth and backlash.

I was just under it looks like the pinion bearing is shot. There was a ton of slop where the driveshaft bolts up in and out and up and down. I tried tightenin the pinion nut with no luck. I don't feel like really screwin with it so it's off to the shop.
