got in trouble for talking in a parking lot

Find much more dope search incident to arrest than I do from plain view. Now plain smell is a pretty good one for marijuana but not other narcotics.

Meh. I'm just kinda leery about police since our officers up here suffer from bored cop syndrome. Don't get me wrong, my grandpa was sheriff of another county for 20 years, my mom lived next to the jail and everything. Our whole family agrees though, local police have no real big crimes to deal with so they get bored and do annoying stuff (I was pulled over for speeding when my speedometer said 31 and I was in a 30 zone, he said I was doing 35, WOW big whop. It was in the middle of the day too, not like I was doing this at bar close or anything). I'm sure you are from a larger department though so you can probably see why I feel this way...would you ever pull someone over for doing 35 in a 30 unless you'd just seem them take a hit of crack or something?

The police in Minneapolis on the other hand are much easier to deal with because you aren't messed with unless you are REALLY out of hand (visible drug deal, VERY bad driving, etc).

Guess I'm just not that big of a fan of our local police and its kinda left a bad feeling in me for all police even though I know it's a bad to do as there are TONS of great officers out there.

A guy I work with used to be a cop in Austin (7 years before he quit) and some of the stuff cops do is funny as heck. They arent all they are cracked up to be, and definatly not law abiding citizens LOL. (atleast in Austin)

But man some of the things they did were funny as heck. Ill just say one random thing they would do to people usually in bad neighborhoods and who looked like they may be drug heads. (which was basically everyone in their eyes...stereotyping EVERYONE but fellow cops.)

Basically him and his partner would drive around and look for people drinking on their front porch, they would then pull over and get out of their car. They would stand on the street corner and my co worker would calmly ask the person to come over so they could talk with him. Ofcourse the guy would by suspicious and be like "hey man are you going to arrest me?" and my co worker would say "no, im not going to arrest you, I just would like to have a word with you".
So the person would walk up to the edge of their lawn/curb and he would backup some and say "come here" a few times and as soon as the guy steps onto the road his partner would cuff him and say "sir your under arrest for public intoxication" and they would haul the guy to jail.
The guy would be all POd and say something like "HEY! you said you wernt going to arrest me!!!!" and my co worker would say "I didnt....my partner did" .

This guy has me about rolling with all the crap like that they pulled. And whats even worse is that ALL of his fellow officers on that shift were the same way lol.

Can't say I wouldn't pull someone over for a 35 in a 30. But most likely not. Depends on the area sitaution etc. I generally give 15 mph over. Except in neighborhoods. But I rarely run radar. I am in the worst thug area of town so I have other things to deal with. Lots of factors go along with why I get out with people or stop their vehicle. It's rarely ever just one reason for stoppng them.

See that sounds like something the police up here would do since there isn't any murders/gangs/hard crime to deal with like bigger cities. That is where I get my bad biased attitude from, and officers like them give the good ones a bad rep. Behavior like that is the reason people don't go to the police when they DO have a problem and street justice takes over, and officers probably get killed when people get fed up with them tricking people (which I believe is against the law right 2.3? Cannot trick someone into breaking the law to get an arrest, you can trick them to admit something but not trick them into breaking the law)

Yeah we don't really have any "thug" areas or anything like that. The trailer park is about the only thuggish area we have, otherwise 99% of stuff is speeding, minors consuming/in possession/whatever (college community, alcohol & minors are the largest thing they deal with, its been in the paper a lot lately), and other petty stuff along with your occasional domestic abuse and whatever.

Well its their word vs his and his partners lol. And the fact that the station doesnt even do a breath or blood test on people brought in for "public intoxication", it really opens up the possability for "bad cop".

They would also do that if random people were smart with them....but only if they were holding a beer or had it on their breath. Good example are people at a night club when they would do security work or people coming out of bars on 6th street.

Take that as a BIG note to self. Dont be smart to a cop if you have been drinking! It sucks, but this stuff happens....atleast im learning what not to do, thats for sure

You guys should be glad the cops have nothing to do. It sounds like the cops that talked with you in the parking lot were pretty cool, cops can be a PITA. I used to street race back in the 70's in high school. There was this cop that never caught me, but he used to follow me all the way to school every day. Sometimes he'd pull me over, but you know what, I deserved it.
You might be glad you're not in the middle of this. I was at ground zero on an engine company when this hit.

It's actually quite common. They'll often pull into a cruise night, or some other place where hot cars are gathered and collect drivers/vehicle info. Aside from checking to see if the car is stolen, it’s a great way to ID the car and/or driver or check for any sort of infractions or disturbance complaints made on them in recent history. Also, in the event that one of you decides to makes and run for it one night and the pursuing officer is only able to get a partial description, or plate number….it makes you nice and easy to find later on down the road.

...and yes, it's totally legal. You can be asked at any time to provide your proof of identity, ownership and insurance without explanation. And as a matter of fact, the police can hold you for up to 24hrs without laying charges if they so wish....so choose your words carefully if you decide to question them on it.

Chalk it up to one of the drawbacks of owning a flashy/fast car.

Hmm, I always noticed signs at the schools I went to that said TRESPASSERS WILL BE PROSECUTED and then some numbers (penal?) after them. I guess those are legal code for "you are trespassing" plus those same signs also said the hours you could be on school property

Hmm, our school never had a single sign that said that...must be a local law. In fact I had been in the school several times at 11pm or so because I'd forgotten a book in my locker or something and went in to get it. Never had any run-ins with the police or anything. It's not a small town or small school either so you can't really chalk it up to that. In fact there were several nights where friends and I would meet in our high school parking lot and the cops would drive through, see us there, and just keep going.

You actually think this is funny?

Situations like that are the reason so many people have no respect for cops or are uncooperative if they're around. Arresting someone or giving them a ticket for something as stupid as having a beer on their front porch might be funny for the cop, but it can have long-term consequences for the guy in cuffs. My best friend was recently given an offer for a government job, and then had it recinded solely because he got a Minor In Possession ticket in 2003 during a situation like the one you described. You sure as h*ll wouldn't be laughing about it if it was you.

Cops like that need to check their egos at the door and remember that their purpose is to protect people, not screw them over.

SO are you saying that he didnt actually have anything on him? Sounds to me like he had some beer and got busted or tricked into letting the police see it. If he was infact drinking and was under 21, then he desirves the ticket and the consequences. He shouldnt have been drinking <21.

now the other stuff, yes its funny but then again its not. I would HATE to have anything like that pulled on me and yes I do think its wrong. But man when talking about all this stuff you cant help but to laugh

Like I said before, it is ILLEGAL for the police to trick you into breaking the law. The only tricking they can do is tricking a confession out of an already fairly guilty suspect. If I had been in their shoes (over OR under 21) I would have fought it too and hope a cops car camera recorded the incident or the audio did so you could prove he tricked you into doing it. I'd at least file a formal complaint and bring it to the media or something.

There was a case up here that went through the supreme court regarding a guy who was pulled over for going 47mph on the interstate. He was drunk and obviously got DUI and whatever. When it finally reached the supreme court, they threw the ticket out because the guy was pulled over ONLY for going 47, nothing else. Since 47 is between the posted minimum (45mph) they had no reason to pull him over and as such he would have never been found driving drunk.

Hopefully the guys telling you about that get challenged and caught doing that and lose their jobs.

most of my friends aren't police.

i like to keep my personal life as far away from work as possible. Many folks live for nothing but the job and it breaks them down very quickly.

Me I put in my 40 hours and I am home. granted sometimes I have to do a little more. But for the most part not. I love my job and couldn't ask for a better job. But it's not my life. I have far more important things to do with my off duty time.
