Well inspection time is here and, well ive got an offroad pipe so im not gonna pass unless I put my old stock h pipe on. My question is, Has anyone gone below the table and payed a shop to 'not notice' the lack of cats? Seeing as how im gonna have to do this i wanted to know how to go about doing it. Im really not sure how to approach someone about it but im willing to pay a little 'extra' to get the job done...

BTW i already know its illegal so dont bother with the legality advice or flames...Thanks!

Do they do a sniff test or anything like that? If all they do is get under the car and check for cats you can just do what my cousin did. He has a trans am with no cats and he just welded some fake cat shells around the pipe where the cats should be and they just looked to see if he had them and he passed.Dont know if that will help or not!

dude if u live in cali its hella easy to pass! mine passed every time, just go to jose in east la and give him a 24 pack of budlight and your golden! love those guys man :)

From one Texan to another...

From what I've read, for an OBD-II car ('96 and up) they plug into your OBD-II port and read any codes. If there are no emissions related codes, you're done. If you have a 95 or earlier, they have to do the sniffer. But this is only in the metro areas that do the emissions checks. If the inspections in your area are still $13.50 then there's no emissions check for you. If you have to pay the $40, then you're in an area that requires the emissions check.

Here's how it went down for me.

There's this inspection place next to a car wash that I always go to. I was due one month and I was out there washing my car. I walked up to the guy and asked him if he looks under the car to check for cats. He asked why. I said I'm due this month, have no cats, and would have to swap midpipes first if he checks for cats. He flat out said not to worry about it and just pull into his inspection bay. He inspected my car without a hitch. No extra fee either. In short, don't offer a bribe. Don't ask them if they'll take extra money to pass an illegal car. Just be honest and direct and ask them if they check for cats. Make sure you ask this before pulling into the inspection bay.

cool thanks propeller, hey i met you at one of the lonestar stang meets not sure if you remember me

yea ill try just bein upfront, i have a diablo tuner so as far as i know it turned off the rear 02 sensors so their shouldnt be any codes poppin up right?

Just don't get the inspector in a questionable position. Like don't ask if he'll pass an illegal car. I'm sure he's worried that you might be working for the state and out to bust him. That's why I was pretty specific with my question yet it doesn't put him in a bad spot no matter how he answers. Plus, I admitted to him flat out that I didn't have cats before I chose to get the car inspected right there.

Pick a small inspection station. One that has just one guy working in it. Don't go to the Sears Auto Center where there are 10+ employees. There's one on Bandera Road outside the 410 loop. I don't know if he's easy going. But his shop is about the size of a trailer and he's in his own small building. Or go outsize the 1604 loop where they will be less pressured to do things by the book.

It's been a while since I was in San Antonio. Is LoneStarStangs still having meets at that burger shop on Friday nights?
