GT Oil Filter Question

I run 5000 miles between oil changes using full synthetic. The weakest link is the filter. I haven't looked to see the size of this filter. Are they installing a fairly large filter on this motor or are they using those tiny filters that have become commonplace? I assume Purolator is the best filter available?

How about Amsoil's oil filter, SDF11 $10.80

Looks like a much larger filter. As soon as I get to 5000 mile, I'm going with Amsoil's synthetic oil & filters! Great stuff :nice:

Dave...

I'm running AMSOIL in my stang.

After all the comapany & independent stuff I've read, I'm convince the stuff is good. :nice:

I even attempted to install the secondary by-pass filtration system, but could not find space under the hood for it.
Which is too bad, as it really keeps the oil clean.

Mobile 1 is pretty good stuff. I ran it in my previous stang without complaint.
It did not test as good as AMSOIL, but it is hard to find apple to apple testing.

As for the filters... AMSOIL claims to be made much better than any of the off the shelf type available.
OEM tested pretty well.

I plan to have my oil tested by an independent lab around 10K miles... just to be sure. Will post results.

I understand that the oil filter is usually the weak link. "Standard" or cheap oil filters will clog after as little as 1500 miles, then simply bypass. You are not getting any filtering at all after a filter bypasses.

I personally use nothing but Motorcraft. The best filters (I understand) are Motorcraft, Purolator, STP, Mobil 1. I am not familiar with Amsoil. I would guess, though, that there is one company making all of these high-quality filters.

As to oil: I used to work for a company that owned DA Lubricants- a premium heavy-equipment oil blender. DA has customers with truck engines that have gone over 1 million miles without even opening them up- using DA. The DA engineers told me that Castrol was the second-best oil out there (which was the first??- DA). So I use only Castrol 5W-20, and change it every 3000 miles. Never an engine problem in almost 30 years of running them to 150K.

the filter holds a quart. it's short & fat. I've changed mine twice. I use the ford filters & buy them at walmart for three dollars. I used the ford filters on my 5.0 90 LX for 100k miles and changed the oil every about every 3k. (yes I had the car for 10 years and did 30 + oil changed myself.)I never had a problem

Sorry, I have to disagree with y'all.

The best oil filter is K&N.

I've typically used Castrol Syntec in my past vehicles, but decided to try the new Quaker State "Q" full synthetic this time around.

Also, I'm partial to Marvel Mystery Oil as an automobile engine additive (in small amounts) - My Dad's been using it in his Cessna's engines for years. Pretty much the same thing as AvBlend.

Personally I'd go with a Motorcraft or Mobil1 filter before I'd use anything sold by AMSOIL or Purolater or Fram.

I've read lots of the AMSOIL propoganda but continue to find it strange that I don't recall ever seeing it sold in most retail channels in Arizona, Nevada, and California. From a marketing perspective that sales plan is exceedingly self-limiting.

I se personally use K&N filters with Redline oil. I have heard a lot of people tell me that amsoil is superior. But when asked for numbers or data. Not a single person could produce info. Including a dealer with their (Amsoil's) own literature.
