GT side skirt air duct removal

My GT is getting painted this winter and I have started to think about modifications I would like to do to the body while it is all apart.

One thing I never liked about the GT are the air ducts on the rear of the side skirt, just before the rear tire.

Has anyone ever tried removing these or seen a car that had this done? Is it possible, not possible, not worth it, etc? I know the 93 cobra side skirts do not have this duct, but I am not interested in spending hundreds of dollars on Cervini cobra side skirts.

Below is a picture of my GT with the above mentioned rear air duct, as well as a Saleen I just saw with the look I am going for. I don't know if this is original for this model Saleen, or if this person did exactly what I am talking about.

Interesting modification, I like it. I personally think it needs to flare out a bit at the rear wheel, similar to the Cobra skirt, but that's just me. I would imagine you could handle that relatively easily with some body putty or fiberglass.

First off.. nice looking car! What color are you painting it? I think the saleen pic is just a stock saleen body kit though.

abc exclusive sells non scooped gt rear skirts for $150. I'm gonna order these when i get to that stage in the build. one member here has em on a red gte and they look great. abc is not known for high quality but these parts are small and not tough to make i would imagine.

You can mess up side skirts easily, most people I talk to say the Saleen skirts for their SN95s were God-awful.

FWIW I have an ABC Exc. hood on my car and it's pretty damn good.

scroll down a few..... they're built for 87-93 and they are made of urethane. $170 shipped. Pricey IMO, but a nice piece to clean off that 80's style scoop.

You need to find an extra GT side skirt to run an experiment. Try and cut off the scoop part of it. More than likely it will leave a hole. If it doesn't you should be able to sand the remainder of the skirt and smooth it back out to look like the cobra skirt.

Its worth a try.

As far as the first Saleen "clone" pic. Looks to me he has a GT side skirt with '93 Cobra rear side skirt piece and rear bumper cover.

The second Saleen pic is of a real SSC.

Funny the original poster of this thread brought this up cause I was thinking of doing this to my Project Mod-Fox since I'm using a 97 Cobra motor, 93 Cobra grill and 93 Cobra rear cover. I didn't wanna spend the extra time on these 4 peices plus I'm sure I would have had an experimental peice. Maybe over the winter I'll consider this when the car is stored cause it IS DO-ABLE.

Yeah, that is what I kind of figured. I might just buy a scrap piece and give it a try though. Good luck with your project. If I end up getting this done before you do, I will make sure I put up a post of how it went...and hopefuly you will do the same

Sounds good....that'd would be great. I'm not 100% if I'm gonna do it. My car is 95% done. The plan was to sell it before 2011 cause I wanna remodel my kitchen with some of the money. But I started a hardwood flooring living room/hallway remodel project last weekend so I don't have time to add the odds and ends that it needs to sell it anytime soon. So maybe I'll sell it next year. Either way, I'm not sure if I wanna mess with it. Ya know?
