GT40 heads good deal?

I know someone who will sell me a set of iron GT40's (not P's) for $200. I have not seen them but am told one head has a worn valve guide and the springs are worn. No rockers come with the deal. I know new springs would be smart anyway since I would install an e cam with the heads, along with a cobra intake. My questions are with the valve guide. I don't want to spend another $400 rebuilding the heads, or else I would just go with alum in the first place. Including new springs I don't want the total investment to go over $350 (not including rockers). Things I'm wondering:

1. Do GT40's have replaceable guides or would machining be required?

2. If replaceable, where would I find one and can it be done at home?

3. Does this worn valve guide still make this a good deal, if so should all guides be replaced?

4. What other cheap repairs should be done to the heads?

Any help would be appreciated.

the guides are part of the head, machined in the metal. So you could have to have a machine shop drill you out and put new replacable guides in.

I think 200 is great deal, i think the gt40s are underrated heads by far.
i would get them dipped, magnaflux, inspected real good, replacing worn parts like the guides. and valve seals are easy.

get a basic 3 angle, milled, mild port and polish, port match and your good to go.

the work you might need might cost a couple hundred, more if you want them ported. But it will be a solid, performing head.

A new spring kit will run you around 100-130 for the kit. I believe that my trickflow kit was 120 and I put the springs on and all that fun stuff.

With any used head you should really get at least a 3 angle valve job. That, springs and the price of the heads will probably put you over your $350 limit. That said I think that they are good heads. I would call around and find out how much a valve job and repairing the retainer are going to cost and then you will have a better idea. If it starts getting up around 500-600 for everything I would save up for some aluminum heads.

My GT40 irons cost $200.00 and the machine work, magniflux, 3angle valve job and everything inspected cost me $300.00. I did the port match, smoothing of ports and bowl blend myself before the shop got them. I bought better springs and gave them to them to install. They cost me $123.00 with a grand total of $623.00. It was worth it for me and it got me over 300rwhp! Can't wait till I get my powerdyne!
