Head install question- please look inside

I am putting on brand new GT40P heads and need to know if I would need, for any reason, to turn engine over by hand for any reason? I assume not since the valves on the head are arlready closed so installing the roller rockers will not require me to turn the engine over to move the valves closed-


anyone can verify this for me?
 
I m not really sure about what you're talking...

You wanna change yours heads,you stop the engine,take off the stock heads,and put the new ones,then adjust your valves one by one,making sure the one you're adjusting is close.
 
yea, but they are new assembled heads with valves already on- both intake and exhaust on all 8 cylinders are all the way against the underside of the head (IE closed)so when my original question is still - cant I just bolt down the rockers to the appropriate torque spec and be done? no need to manually close the valves by cranking the engine because the heads already have the valves closed-

now if I was simply putting rockers on my exisitng heads, which have the valves all closed or open since the last time I ran the car- I would have to adjust each individual valve closed,,, right?
 
Ok i understand that your heads are pedestal mount and not stud mount

If so,i think that yes,you just have to tork your rockers in the spec they give you.

I tought your heads was stud mount.
 
I think I understand your question... Just think about it for a minute. The heads that are sitting on your bench have all the valves closed.... the heads on the engine have some valves open - because the rockers have them held open, because the pushrod is pushing the rocker, because the lifter is pushing on the pushrod, because the rocker is resting on a cab lobe.... You see it? When you remove the rockers from your engine, all the valves on those heads will close too. When you put the new heads on, the valves will also be closed. When you put the rockers on, if you DO NOT rotate the engine as you go, the valves that were open before will be open again.

I guess you could, in theory, install the new heads without rotating it if you have pedistal mounted rockers (non adjustable - bolt down and torque to 25 ft lbs) but I would advise against it. It's easy to find #1 TDC if you have the valve covers off. Just put a socket on an extension at the end of a ratchet wrench and turn the crank pulley until the timing mark is at '0'.... check the #1 valves, if they are both closed, then you are at TDC of the compression stroke... If they are open, turn the engine over one more time and they will then be closed.
Install the heads, then starting with #1, install the rockers. When you are done with #1's rockers, turn the crank clockwise 90 degrees (1/4 turn) and do the next cylinder in the firing order (can't remember off hand which it is - check any service manual for firing order).
Do this 8 times (1.75 rotations of the crank) and you will have all the rockers installed properly - when the valves were closed.

Oz, thanks so much- I appreciate your thorough ness- my heads are ped mount though, no stud- sooooooo wouldnt it be true that as I bolt down each rocker- if it were open on the OEM heads, then as I bolted it down the rocker would open the new head's valve since the lifter for that valve will be elevated in the block because it is riding on a cam lobe?

mind you - I am doing this job with a mechanic but want to do all the tear down myself but dont want to make my life harder when doing this job...
 
Yea, if you don't rotate the engine by hand like I described as you install the rockers, some will be open as you bold them down. I would REALLY advise against this because you need to confirn the proper valve lash when you install the heads - even thought they are pedistal.
You want about .030 of preload on the lifters when you reach 25 ft lbs of torque on the rocker nuts.
