Header Porting?

Who has done this, i noticed when i went to put my gaskets etc. on the heads that they matched the port of the head almost perfectly, and put them to my headers just for Snits&giggles, WAY OFF, so i gasket matched my header openings. Does anyone think that this will help, or has anyone else done this?

Oh yeah i must add, be careful if you do this, i now have to take one to work and tig down one side of the number one primary lol

trying to maximize what i got...... couldn't really afford new headers right now..... long tubes are in the works in a couple of months..

Flow can be improved in this area :nice:

No different that any other instance where two parts with ports bolt together.

You mock em up to see how they match.

The focus in on the match up of the parts and not so much the gasket.

I do confess to spending a bit of time in this area on my combo ;)

Yes, you could go a bit too far with the old die grinder and see daylight through a hole that is not supposed to be there :rlaugh:

I believe a lot of guys that run the stock classes do this as a way to increase exhaust flow for more power. You mentioned having to TIG the one primary, but I'm almost positive that they re-weld all of the primary tubes on the outside, so they have the room to grind away on the inside. I had been planning it myself, since my bro can weld pretty good. :nice:
 
well i am gonna weld it up tonight, i will weld the ones i need on the outside to get the clearance i need as i am not done.... just wondering what other do this?


Grady, i am trying to do this right this time, have been slowly putting the car back together for a week. :nice: should be worth it... I hope... throw 2g worth of parts at a car, i hope somehting good comes of it...lol

Has anyone who done this on a header with a flange ever considered cutting the flange, leaving two bolt holes and the neccessary flange to bolt it up only.....

seems as if it would seal better...i have noticed a lot of headers that are made that way, i can do that with the plasma cutter here at work without trouble and make it look clean if it is worth it.

I'm sure it's been done (cutting the flange), but if you ever remove them for any reason, it can be difficult to put them back on. The primary tubes distort with heat, and they might not line up with the exhaust ports without a little extra elbow grease.
 
I bought my headers mainly for the fact that they DID have one continuos flange running between all the primaries for the warping reasons Matt mentioned in the above post. I wouldn't cut them if it was my car.

Same stuff I used to port my heads ... die grinder & carbide burrs.

No reason a dremel and their associated bits would not work here as you are not really removing all that much material for this application.

dremel would work fine.

I decided against cutting them after he made that point about the warpage. I have both welded out, and the the tubes matched to the gasket, the gasket is very slightly larger than the head port so there should be no turbulence.

The thing about this whole deal is

The ports on the AFR's are sooooo wide :eek:

If you look at the width of the header pipe from outside to outside

That is still more narrow than the port :shock:

Any you go about it, some of the port is gonna be covered :fuss:

I have been told 1 3/4 pipes don't cover that bad. :shrug:

Ain't hot roddin exasperating from time to time :rlaugh:

actually grady with the work i did to those, none of the port is covered now.... But took welding ALL the primaries on the outside, and REALLY opening them up..


:nice: I like the small stuff like this better than other stuff i have done to the car though, headers are back on the car, and got my gauges plumbed up today, along with some other tedious stuff, she will run by this weekend.. :spot: I HOPE

I have heard that cleaning up the headers like this really only yields marginal HP in a street car. Nothing you would ever feel, and maybe not something you would clearly see even on a before/after dyno.

But then again, more power to you on hitting all the details.

Its these "attention to details" that will put you ahead of similarly equipped cars. Ever wonder why one guy with HCI out powers similarly equipped cars... its all in the details. :nice:
