Hey guys summers almost here and im getting ready to do my performance mods, but first i need highflowing exhaust. I don't know what headers to go with. Should I go with hedman or hooker? I need maximum performance gains. I plan to run it with a crossover system.

Sorry for a lack of info. I need to make a signature. It's a 1969 Mustang Mach1 with 351 Windsor and power steering. I plan to do concours down the road with it but for now i figure ill do performance. So when i get older and can afford a concourse ill put the originals back on.

Can someone tell me the difference between Hooker Comp and Hooker Super Comps? I can't tell the difference. Also does anyone have those in their 66 with a 4 speed? I was looking in the PAW catalog and the little notes show that they need special motor mounts. Does that make sense to anyone?

THanks

Supercomps are lighter.
That is good and bad...
They make them lighter by using thin metal. They are technically not a street item.
Also, they are either tuned length or equal length... not sure exactly which.
Depending on what engine you are working with, the Supercomps sometimes have larger primarys than the Comps.
In the end, there is not much difference between LT headers power-wise.
Good luck
Dave

So should I go with the comps? My car will be a street car, but with around 400 flywheel horsepower hopefully. Will the supercomps make that much of a difference. What would the cost for a set of ceramic coated comps. I was thinking hedman elites.

Ha ! I've been trying to decide for a month, with the same application.
$259 for the ceramic coated Hedman Elite, $505 for the ceramic coated Super Comp's.

I think that I'm going with the Hedman. I know that you get what you pay for, but I'm not sure that the ground clearance and installation issues are worth the 10 HP.

Sure would like to heard from someone with a 69/70 with a 351W Auto Tranny !!!

Yeah im thinking im going to go with the hedman elites for the price sounds more practical. Im confused though they are sold in pairs right? Will it fit my 1969 351 W and fmx transmission. And should i go with straight pipe? I need power producing exhaust, but the car has to sound mean and loud as hell. I want sleeping children to wake up when i drive by.

i think all of the elite series headers will fit automatics, you will need the power steering drop bracket to fit any long tube. i have hedman shorties and absolutely love them, no need for a drop bracket with them either. if you really want it loud i would go with a 2-1/2" mandrel bent exhaust system with an h pipe and 2 chamber flow masters. an x pipe will get you a little more power but will be slightly quieter than an h pipe. i've read some header reviews and most show that the shorty headers produce slightly more top end power but lose some low end torque to the long tubes. what are the specs for 351 you are building? if you're motor is going to a torque monster you might consider the shorties over the long tubes as the loss of low end torque will be minimal, but the top end power you'd gain might be a good trade off

I don't know what performance im doing for sure, but i need the torque. I was planning on edelbrock victor jr. heads, a new cam, longtube headers with the mandrel bent 2.5", i just don't know what mufflers to use or if i should just straight pipe it. Right now my car hits a pitiful 155 horsepower at the wheels :bang: . I am at 5000ft elevation, but i hope this will get the car to 400 hp at the flywheel. I just want to kick the crap out of any sti's or wrx's that come my way all the kids are drivin those these days.

When it comes to mufflers, the 2 chamber Flows are loud. Both in and out of the car. I kept a set of Flows and a set of turbos that I would switch in and out occaisionally when the drone got old. Turbo type mufflers sound good in the car, but are not nearly as aggressive as chamber types outside.
Then there is always the tried and true glasspack type... It has a distinct sound and can drone in the car like chambers, but if you go with a good design, it will outflow anything less than open headers. Something like DynoMax Race Bullets flow like open pipe, and they are very inexpensive. Lesser glasspacks, like cherry bombs, have small internals and flow obstructing fins, so you have to do a little looking for a good set. Then again, I just named the best bullet type for you... DynoMax Race Bullet. They come in sizes from 2.5" to 4" and 12" to 18" bodies. If I was building a 2.5" system, I would get a set of 24219 bullets, 3", and cone the ends up/down to 2.5" pipe. That would slow the exhaust flow inside the muffler, taming the sound a tiny bit and insure totally free flow. That part is around $40 each from Summit or Jegs.
Good luck
Dave

Edit: The other good thing about bullets is that they are super lightwieght and take up very little space.

Me too, especially from someone that has put an AOD in as well. Clearance issues?
I posted this just the other day but it was asked for again. This is not a 69/70 but the engine compartment and transmission tunnels are the same as my '67. These are ceramic coated Hedmann Elites on a 351W with an AOD behind it. Plenty of room for aftermarket rack and pinion and also plenty of ground clearance.

I agree that is a very nice looking engine compartment. Will the hedman elites be okay with power steering though??
Yes, you'll need the PS 1" drop bracket just like you will with every long-tube I've ever used. You could do a rack-and-pinion and avoid that though :D

Wow....those look great.

Makes me glad that I ordered a set this morning!! Hey, maybe my luck is changing

One difference is that the Super Comps hang lower to the ground at the collectors. Personally, I prefer the Comps primarily for this reason if it's a street car.
