I've done it without pulling the dash before on a 93' Mustang. I was able to loosen the dash and slide the HVAC box out the bottom on the passenger side. Not sure it saved me a whole lot of time over pulling the dash. It certainly kept me from scratching a bunch of stuff up with those dash mounting tabs though.
