heater core removal

I was wondering if anybody had taken a heater core out of a non a/c mustang. I've been told that you have to take the dash almost all the way out. True or not true? thanks for any answers i may receive.

Yes dash pretty much has to be totally removed, royal PITA.

do a search here and on google there are tons of threads on how to do it.

I have a non A/C stang and was told the same thing but I don't think I have got a "for sure" answer..

Roland, you're still going to have to remove your dash even without A/C because if memory serves me correctly the heater box which houses the core is way behind the glove box area and can't be reached with the dash intact. The A/C lines only make the job a little harder for an already difficult task.

do some more research, I've ALWAYS Been told, that if it's a NON ac car from the factory, access can be achieved through the glove box.

Ac delete cars don't count, they've got a different heater box.

I remember reading in a Mustang Monthly I think that only the pre-'87 non-ac cars can be easily accessed through the glove box. Before I took my '90 apart, I couldn't find any way to access the heater core only through the glove box, A/C lines or not, they are not the only things that make the heater case difficult to get to. The panel on the heater case that reveals the core opens on the top and its a bitch to reach the bolts back there, among all the other crap thats stuffed behind the dash.

But like you said, do some more research and find out for sure, from my experience I don't think you can reach the core just through the glove box even on a non-a/c 87-93 car.

My non ac 82 is easy, it only takes an hour or so. You remove the glove compartment, the hoses, and one cover, and it pulls out.

Not sure about the later ones.

I debated long and hard before paying to have it done on my 89 GT. I was so glad that I did, given the time and frustration that it would have caused. But, if you really want a learning experience . . . LOL

You WILL have to pull your dash. My 90 vert is a non AC car and I still had to. Even the non AC fox bodies are a huge Pain in the *ss. On the bright side, it's nothing too technical, just unbolting a lot of parts. It's a pain, but you can save yourself 3-400 dollars by not paying somebody to do it.

This job sucks,but I don`t trust a shop to do it.
I`ve done it twice and never had any left over screws.

Some mechanics are sloppy and likely try and rush it,plus the high cost.

This job is not for everyone though...you need some mechanical aptitude to pull this one off .

I`m speaking in terms of an 89 with AC here.
