If you looking for a beater/driver you could look for at the early-mid 90's Taurus's.

Myself and a buddy had one as winter beaters/drivers/pizza delivery cars in college. My buddy drove his 4cyl with a rod knock for 40K+ miles, mine developed a knock in the trans and it still drove fine. I parked at the metro-link Hanley station while going to U.M. St Louis and got bashed into a few times.

Those things are TANKS...when I got a new beater we literly ran over it with a lifted K5 blazer, bashed it with my bronco, blazer, and a 3/4 ton truck with a heavy duty push bar. Then I DROVE it to the junk yard . I wedge a big ice scraper to the gas peddle thinking it would not take long to blow up...took 10-15min of WOT.

You could probably find a nice gen1 SHO or something around 3k.

You are correct, it's like when you don't have the funds there are all kinds of bargains out there and the minute you have the resources you can't seem to find nuthin! When I was a kid I had a 200.00 beater every 6 months, now that same car is 2000.00 I will try to extract some patience, but the sooner I find something the sooner I can start yanking the Stangs motor and get a 351

When I "found" my Escort, I was looking to spend about $2,500. I was a the Toyota Dealer looking at a 92-93 Corolla. I was like...eh....so I just kept walking around and saw the Escort...I asked about it and the guy didnt even know why it was there. He went in the office and found out it was just detailed that day (in a trade from the previous day). It almost looked new except for a few dings (paint "QUALITY" wa good though). The asking price was $3k...it had 36k miles, power windows, cruise, ICE cold air, and was really clean. I figured for $500 more than I wanted to spend it was worth it. I got a 48-hr full money back warranty a 30-day repair warranty.....to protect against getting a lemon.

Been driving it ever since...5/05. Just a matter of timing. You can even go in and leave a phone number with a few "anxious" sales people and ask them to call you if a particular car becomes available.

Good luck
RC
