During the removal of the dash I was disconnecting the plugs from the steering column and found major problems. I have no idea what to do now. Help please.

That appears to be what's left of your ignition switch, located on the bottom of the steering column. @jrichker for the install writeup

Ford has a TSB back in the day. They are known to melt and fail. I'm surprised your car started and the gauges, lights etc worked. Better yet, I'm amazed the car didnt burn to the wheels.

Recall on Ford Ignition switches:
Some of the symptoms of ignition switch problems are things that don’t work or are intermittent like radio, turn signals, wipers or heater.

There was a FREE recall on Ford ignition switches. They overheat and sometimes catch fire. That burns up the steering column and sometimes the car interior. Since this is very old information, you may not be able to get the switch replaced for free anymore. The auto parts stores sell the switches for $13-$15.

Saleen0679 was nice enough to dig this up for us awhile back: Replace a 1979-1993 Ignition Switch Assembly

Latemodelresto.com has all the parts to fix that stuff, inexpensive and free shipping no matter how small your order is. Don't do what some tutorials say and try to drill out the torx bits that hold the ignition switch to the steering column. Just spend a couple dollars at Advance or Auto Zone or anywhere else and get the proper bit. I believe it is a T-27 security bit, but double check that.

He's right.

For less than $10 you can get a full set of bits and a 1/4" hex to 1/4" square drive. It's a great addition to your Mustang tool kit..
