That was great for old-school face to face contact with the seller, but new technology brings new methods of doing things. In this situation, you're trusting escrow, not the buyer. It's great to be open minded, but be smart too - that's pretty much the key to most of life as far as I'm concerned.
Either way, I don't guess it matters anymore.
Good luck selling the car. If you sell it on ebay, you might mention that you'll do the escrow service at the buyers expense, if they wish. A lot of people won't buy online (some have and quit) because of scams, so easing their fears, especially on a large purchase like this, is crucial to the sale.
