Hoosier 27x10 full race slicks. I have some questions.

Some people tell me that I'm going to bog out bad and that I should run it at 20-24psi with a massive burnout so I can avoid it. And others tell me that I need to lower it to 11-14 psi and do a massive burnout as well.

I went to the track on Friday and left it at 15psi and did a very mild burnout, no smoke at all, and I spun all of 1st gear. Now this tells me that I need to lower the pressure and do a heavier burnout, but some tell me otherwise. I didn't get a chance to run again, ****in rain. I was really nervous that I was going to break something and that is why my burnout was quick and smokeless.

The reason why I bought these tires was because I got a steal for them ($125) and they only had 2 passes. The 'holes' are brand new. The guy who had them bought them off his uncle whom ran them twice on his Nova. This guy had them sitting for I don't know how long in a tool shed, so he never used them.

What are your guys opinions? I know it's best to try, but I just want a heads up.
 
I have no idea what you just said. They're Hossiers full race slicks.



street tires=radial ply
REAL slicks= bias ply

stree tires=no inner tube
REAL slicks= inner tube


full race slicks does not describe the tire very well. i have seen people call a bald set of bfg drag radials slicks before.

depending on if the tire has an inner tube or not will dictate a lot too.

so, like i said before, if the are bias ply tubed slicks, then you should run them at 8-10 psi.

you want low pressure so they wrinkle when you launch.

These are just like my slicks. When I had them mounted, no tube was used. The pic you posted look like mine, but I don't think mine wrinkle like that. The side wall seems too hard.

Look you want to run as much tire pressure as you can get away with. Track prep is going to play a huge roll in this. Off the footbrake my ET Drags will hook at 20psi, on the T-brake I run them anywhere from 12-15psi depending on the conditions. Also I would check Hoosier's site on burnouts required for that tire. My ET Drags need a good heat cycle first pass, after that they require very little burnout. The less pressure you run the more the back end can move on the big end and that is more rolling resistance.
 
Redsnk, that is exactly what happened. I went with lower psi everytime and it didn't help.

13.55 @101.13 with 13psi and a 1.89 60's
13.43 @ ??? with 11psi and a 1.79 60's
13.57 @ 101.25 with 9 psi and a 1.88 60's
I did massive burnouts and it didn't help at all.

Not only did I have crappy 60's, but the tires stole almost 3+ mph. With some loaner et streets on 8" prostars, my 60's were consistant 1.72s and a best of 1.68 and I ran a 13.0 @ 104.78 and a 13.1 @ 102. I only ran the et streets 4 times, 1 time more than these and my times were soo much better. Nothing else has changed on the car. I really think these tires are TOO big for my car. I'm selling them!

One thing for sure is the height of the tire killed you. Your stock wheels are probably 25.75" tall or so and you bolted on a set of 27" tires....you really killed your rear gear, basically like making your 4.10s into 3.27s.

The tire I would recommend for you is a 26x8.5 ET Drag or 26x10 ET Street, these tires are the same size and will be adequate down into the low 11s. A 26x10 ET Drag or 26x11.5 ET Street will be too big for the power you are making.
I would also look into a set of MT ET Radials as well as they hook very well for a radial type tire.

Just for grins way back when my car was stock, I think back in '99. I had full exhaust, gears, and mass air meter on drag radials the car ran 13.40s. I bought a set of 26x8.5 ET Drags, ran then around 18-19psi and ran some 13.20s-13.10s...they worked pretty well.
 
I have some 15x10 prostars, so I'm going to HAVE TO get the 26x10 et streets, they're really what I'm looking for. The et streets I had borrowed were 26x11.5 but were mounted on a 8" wheel. Do you think I should sell my 10" prostars and get some 8"? So even on et streets you're saying that I need to run 16+ of pressure. Everyone keeps telling me to lower it as much as I can. What's their misconception?

Just a thought or two from my experience :)

Back in the day I was drag racing, I ran M&H Racemaster and Hoosiers

They were a full slick, bias side wall or more commonly called
Wrinkle Wall Slicks

Just as you have been advised
Lowering the pressure can ... at times ... give more bite
however
The trade off of low pressure is on the big end

The bias side walls are very soft
which
allows them to not only wrinkle at launch
but
They grow as you go farther down the track
and
At the end ... you got both the sidewall growing
and
lowered pressure producing instability

Both makes the car's back end sway back and forth
so
The lower the pressure ... the more sway

Now ... even if you run them with a good bit of pressure
A small bit of sway is just something that happens

As said before ... you find the best compromise
between
high end stability and bite

We floated the pressure between mid to high teens

If it was really sticky ... we might go up to 22 or 24

I found no benefit in bite by going lower than 14 :nono:
and
It got too squirrelly ... so ... why go there ;)

Might not be the same for tires like MT Streets
but
I got a gut feeling the bias sidewall slicks are still the same.

Then again ........
I was pushing cars with aero's like a brick through the air :rlaugh:
as opposed to
Our much more efficient aero body style of today's Stangs :nice:

Just play with the pressure and see how it effects both
bite and the high end sway factor.
