Read some of my other threads and you'll see that I'm considering an engine upgrade by way of new aluminum heads and intake. I wonder, if I make my mach 1 style hood scoop funcitonal, will that give me an extra inch or so. If so, how do I do it??!!

What year Mach is it. And what size motor now, what size are you considering dropping in? Is your hood a ShakerHood scoop now or a non-fucinal one. Stock Mach I hood sroop or BOSS scoop? Give us some more info

Open the scoop. Trim the lid so it only covers the element. Glue foam around the outside of the outer housing so it sticks up enough to seal against the hood.

Just make sure the scoop is getting clean, fresh air into your engine compartment. A scoop for a ram air effect...sealing it to eh carb, etc etc....will not improve engine performance.

I changed my mach I scoop to a BOSS scoop, it is much larger, and cut the insert out of the hood so my K&N air filter would fit. It is sticking out above the hood but just under the scoop. Thus nice fresh cold air to the carb.

The car is a 1970 fastback. not a mach or boss, just a fastback. The engine is out of a '69 mach 1. It's a 351W soon to have new heads and probably a taller intake topped by an edelbrock carb for now. The hood scoop is a mach 1 style.

if you dont care about cutting the hood I would do what I did and change the scoop to a Boss scoop that is bigger and cut the hole and this will look good as you can see the air filter from under the scoop. If you think that this is something you might do I wil email you a picture of mine when I get back home next week.

I had always liked the look of the mach scoop over the larger boss scoop, but it would look awesome to see the filter through the scoop. Kinda like the new cobra! e-mail me a pic if it isn't too much trouble.

do u guys with the big boss scoops that are not ram air, and running an open filter have any trouble at all with water, i have a scoop similar to a boss, and i am afraid of water entering the engine compartment through the scoop. Let me know what ya guys think, or how u solved this problem.
