How do you guys work under the hood on older cars?

Im having a fooking hard time getting off the bar that goes ontop of the engine that blocks you from lifting anything up. I mean its near impossbile loosen bolts that been sitting for damn near 10-11 years rusting up. I just scriped both of my 10mm sockets trying to remove stuff from under the hood. What do i need? An air tool or something because removing rusted old bolts is killing all my tool extensions =( Do i n eed a set of $100 sockets? Would it be better just to get an air tool?

Well Ive worked on stuff from the 50's up to my '00 GT. Cars, trucks, Jeeps, you name it. Lots of skinned knuckles, burns, cussing, and beer!! If you can get a good hold of it and have room... whack the wrench with a mallet. A long piece of pipe to go on a ratchet helps. Try using some PB Blaster. But I also have numerous power tools and air tools. And if none of that works, bust out the grinder, cut-off wheel and sawz-all!!!

With my 75 camaro i used air tools and if i didnt have it with the older cars you can actually sit on the fender with your feet on the inside of the engine bay. i miss my old tanker, lol.

PB blaster, WD-40..... coke or pepsi can also take the corosion off of your battery terminals.

If you cannot afford air tools, use a good long breaker bar with six point and pb blaster.

I heard about coke on that, but inst wd-40 kind of to flameable for battery terminal?

I used PBBlaster...good stuff. You are working on your strut tower brace. It took some effort to get mine off but once you spray it down with the blaster it will loosen up for you.

Be sure to label each bolt you remove and the location. I use Ziplok snak bags to put each set of bolts in and used tape on each one with a number on it...a little anal but I knew exactly where each bolt/nut came from. Like the strut tower bolts and the intake manifold bolts...any bracket bolts and so on.

Is it a safety hazard to keep that bar off on a vert?

+1 for PB Blaster. I should buy stock in that crap. It's important to let it soak in for a few minutes so it can do it's magic. Spraying it right on then trying to turn the nut/bolt rarely works. I tend to use a box end wrench with a prybar for really stubborn stuff.

its even better if you spray it on a few days in advance, and continually do it once a day until the time you are ready for the job.

i PBed all the manifold, manifold-turbo and turbo-exhaust bolts every morning before startup and every night each day a good couple days before i knew i was going to take the turbo/manny off of my dsm, bolts came off with ease, and no broken studs or stripped heads.
