Instead of immediately yanking the stock 302 in my 89LX i was thinking of throwing a few bolt ons to see how i can wake up the stocker. Any guess on what the following mods will net me?

GT40 heads ported big valves
E303 cam
Roller rockers
GT40 Intake
Equal length headers, hi flow cat, straight pipes

How long till the "real shortblock" is done? That stuff will probably get you around 260-280 to the wheels, and run mid-high 12's on slicks. But those arent exactly "bolt ons", its a decent sized job, and a good amount of money can go into the extras, gaskets, coolant, and all the other little crap you need to buy. Are you going to be putting that same HCI on the new short block? More info will be needed to know whether if its worth it or not.

Combo for new shortblock?
How long its going to be?
Have you installed that stuff before?
Do you have the parts?

Well guys i just bought my LX so there have been no mods to it yet. The motor comes last as i am focused on building a great platform for performance: meaning the suspension.

I think with the exception of the cam i will be reusing all of the same parts from the old motor when i build the new one.

Will the GT40 intake feed a 347?

if your going to build a 347 i would build it right.... afr 205 heads or tfs R series or whatever is above twisted wedges, probably for a 347... custom cam.... tfs r intake... anything else is just restriction.... just my opinion....

I do intend on building the next motor right, but its also fun to see just how much power i can squeeze out of the stock shortblock. I dont expect to set any records.. just have a little fun in between the 347 build.

What is a good cam for a auto car ? Are the E,F,B,X 303 cams any good?

Dont get gt40 heads, or cobra intake they suck....

Point to the poster is, your going to be spending 300 for gt40 heads, might have to get work done on them, 180 for springs retainers, 200 for rockers.

150 for letter cam

350 for intake. Then about 400 for all the extra stuff your going to need to make it work.

Youll need small stuff like timing kit, spark plugs, tune up stuff.

Its going to add up, to alot of money.

Why spend all that money when in a year your going to have to throw out 900 for a 347 kit, then pay a machine shop to machine the block and assemble it, then 1500 for afr heads, 600 for an intake, 300 for a custom cam.

So youll really be spending 1800 for heads, 950 for intake, and 450 for cam, if you add up the hci for the new shortblock and your 302. If your just "planning" on building the 347 then go ahead and go through with your budget hci, but it will not be worth it if the new short block is coming in a year or 2.

And if your paying someone to install this HCI I hope you have a very good job.

Itll be pretty pointless to put those parts on a 347. Youll be spending thousdands of dollars building a motor that can hold 500hp and capable of reving to 7k rpm, and limiting it to making 320hp and only being able to rev to 5500. Take it from a person who has a explorer/cobra intake, gt40 heads, and a letter cam, the setup SUCKS. Id never even waste my time or money putting this combo on a 347.

if your going to build a motor do it right, dont waste your money on something your going to tear down again. do some research on what you want to put on it and go from there. The money you plan spending those mods you could get a 331 or 347 short block for that much. If it was me i'd save my money and do some researching.

What's wrong with a cobra intake or GT40 heads (P/X?)

All --
Great advice. I guess i will just save the motor for last and build the 347ci motor. I have noted all of your suggestions for heads/cams and intake.

I have a great deal with a buddy of mine who owns a machine shop so im just basically paying for parts.

I was talking about iron heads. For a budget build their great. For a high performance engine theres much more stuff id rather spend my money on, especially once you dished out a few thousand for a great foundation.

the material the head is made out of has nothing to do with the way the head performs. . . the weight difference is the reason why aluminum is better. A victor jr head would provide the same gains wheather it was cast iron or aluminum

Down the road I was thinking about buying a GT40 crate motor (the one with X303 heads, E303 cam) and just slapping a cobra intake on it.

What do you think about that combo? I'm just looking for 330-400HP or so to have fun with in a street car.

Are there any other crate engines out there similar to the GT40?
