Well now that my car has gears I notice a definite whine. However i think it is related to the O/D in the trans as it changed significantly btween 4th and 5th gear at the same speed (100+ mph indicated, went from 2.73 to 3.73 so that is about 75+ mph actual).

The rear seal (around the D/S) is leaking anyway so is it a simple R&R to change out the rear bearing in the trans at the same time. They seem to be cheap enough.

in order to change the rear output bearing the whole tranny needs to be removed, the seal does not. its a pressed fit bearing in there. Only kno because some ******* put a earlier t5 in mine and didn't get a driveshaft spacer or make a decent mount so the d/s wore it out. lookin at 450-600 or just 800 for a rebuilt t5 installed

If it's just the seal leaking ..... you just drop the D/S and put a new one in there. I've done it several times. It's easy. If you have a rear bearing problem .... well honestly I know nothing about that ... but yeah, I'd imagine the tranny has to be dropped.
