How much hp will a stock 5.0 block handle

Well I guess it's kinda late to ask this but after i got the blower bolted onto my freashly built 347 i was told that a stock 5.0 block will only hold up to about 900h/p before cracking in half is this true? If it is before I break it in i might buy the new sportsmans block. Just want a few more opions. I should have around 800 at the crank.
 
With that kind of H.P. it is only a matter not of If but WHEN it is going to bust wide open. The Dart block is an excellent piece, but so is the new Boss block that Ford just released. In fact I think the Boss block is cheaper. Either way you cannot go wrong.:D
 
search..... 500hp and your pushing it then, throw a power adder and your living on a prayer. some make it a while, others go for a long time. you never know. a prepped dss block is te best for the long haul though
 
800 h/p is WAAAAAY over the limits of the stock block. The typical numbers thrown around are ~450-500 h/p at the wheels in regards to the blocks limitations. Some have gotten away with more while some less. Given 15% drive train loss and your looking at 680 at the wheels. At those levels the minimum you'll need is a 351 block. The far better choice is going with a dart sportsman block however.

yep. i busted mine and it was dynoed at 445hp. but it was a D.D. also.
 
Over on Turbomustangs dot com.......you will see a thread devoted to stock blocks being split in half. Most over there will tell you they bust at the 500hp level. Many have made more with stock blocks and have yet to bust.

I would be sick to my stomache to spend good money on a ticking time bomb!

I have a friend that is making 800rwhp
on blown DSS 347 on stock block, but we both know
its living on borrowed time.

Most people say do not exceed 400-450rwhp on stock 302 block
if you want it to last.
beyond that and its a ticking bomb
 
I have exploded two different stock blocks in the past 3 years or so. The last one was a stock 90 5.0 block that was turned into a 306 with a Novi on it. It made 467rwhp and it busted the main caps and split right in front of the starter. The other one was a DSS Pro Bullet 331 N/A car that made 432rwhp. I think that the rpms of the 331 with the N-91 cam is what killed it. The car lasted about 2 1/2 years through hundreds of wide open 1/4 passes. It had the DSS main support system on it but it still busted a main cap and broke the main support. That let the crank move which in turn broke the end of the crank and busted the front of the block as well. I think that a stock block that is prepped right and is kept under 6,500 rpms will last for a long time if the hp level is under 550 flywheel hp. I personally am not going to run any more stock late model 302 blocks from now on with any new power adder cars I build. I have a few friends with Ford Sportsman blocks that are having real good luck pushing around 600-800rwhp with street cars.
 
this issue has been beaten to 4 deaths! The real answer is.....ITS A CRAPSHOOT! Some blocks split at 390hp while others survive seasons at 600hp! Want insurablity????? get an aftermarket block or upgrade to a windsor!

says who? DSS uses stock blocks, so theirs aren't any stronger than a stocker. The only thing is they may put a girdle on it to hold it together after it breaks.

Besides, It's been posted on here several times within the past couple years...DSS isn't what they used to be. They've let their publicity go to the head and quality go out the window...that's according to several threads on here. I have no personal experience, but I wouldn't buy from them just based on what I've heard. I certainly wouldn't say theirs would be up for the long haul if they're still using the stock block. If you went w/ their dart or something, then yeah...
