i'm am re-building/restoring a 88 t-top lx. due to the simi-rare nature of this car. my wife thinks we should take it back to stock and make it look like it just rolled off the showroom floor. almost numbers matching. like a time capsule to the year 1988. i like the idea, however i'm not sure the stock heads and intake can make enuff power for my taste.

if i ported the stock intake and heads and only did power inprovements that were not visable from the outside (such as port heads and intake, roller rockers, port the t.b, gears, stroker kit, mill heads, and the like) what kind of power could the eng make.

i think you'd be doing good if you saw 300 to the wheels if you did everything you stated

250hp 300tq with what you stated. More if you start with gt-40 heads.275 with them. You can squeeze 300 out of it but it is tough.

ive seen ported stock head/intake combos in the 260 range and that was on a 302/306. I think it will be even more if displacement is increased to 331 or 347 range. Only one way to find out

I have the stock intake and everything on mine with just what I have listed on my signature done to it and it is a very fun car. They are so light, you don't need much over 300 hp. That is right around where I am at

i would throw the performance book at it cam and all. but keep the stock intake and heads well and stock air tube

it has 4.10 gears in it now, but i'm thinking of swaping it to 3.73's

300 hp. not at the wheels. I don't have a dyno sheet but it is no bs. The car is very light

weight has nothing to do with HP. it takes more than deleting accessories and underdrive pullies to hit 300hp. with those mods I'd give you 240 to the crank and that is being generous

its harder for stock heads and intake to flow good enough to make good power or keep up with a stroker shortblock. the extra cubes mean nothing if the heads and intake cant flow enough air to fill the cylinders.

i am sure it has and can be done but the topic poster said he would do the porting himself. i doubt the poster is a professional porter to efficiently port the heads and intake and make them good enough to make the number. but he could be i duno...

i think a really nice engine, with some bumped compression with milled heads and some badass ported e7s and stock intake that would flow good with a stroker, i could see it making 300RWHP but i think its beyond the average hot rod joe's capabilities to do it himself by porting the heads and such.

its much easier to just get a blower or nitrous or a HCI kit and make the number that way.

Give it a stroker and you can make decent power if you know someone that can really work the stock heads and intake. 12s will be no problem.

i would have a shop do it.

it would be easer to use a blower but thats missing the point

my guess of 300 was if everything he listed was done right (ie thumper or tmoss kinda stuff, with a stroker kit). I have heard of ported e7's and intake, and a few other things making nearly 280 hp to the wheels, but that is definitely not easy. He wants to know what he can do, and keep it looking bone stock(so the hci or blower is out of the question). i think if he went all out , 300 would be about it.

I have an article on my website in the Tech section named "How Much Power Can Ported Stock Parts Make" that includes three different stock buildups and dyno data.

yeah sorry, your not even close to 300 hundred, like said already you will be luck yif your seeing 240 at the crank , these cars make 225 hp stock, you have not really don e anything to give you any more ponies. Just a throttle body and fuel pump reallly, So careful what you tell people, cuz this kind of talk is what gives stangers bad names

Guys, he's deleted the power steering, deleted the air conditioning, and added an electric waterpump. He also has "rebuilt 302" listed. If he's replaced the pistons (and I'm not sure if that was part of the rebuild) but you can bet the compression was bumped around a full point (since EVERY aftermarket flat top will do that). I'm not saying he's got 300hp (because I don't think he does), but I think you're all underestimating how much all those accessories really kill our motors. He'll have the crank pulley and if he didn't go directly to a low mount alt., he'll have a free spinning idler on the w/p.

To the original poster, if you use stock heads and intake (even ported) on a stroker, it will run like a diesel. You'll make great torque down low and it will be dead at 5000rpm. You'll choke the motor trying to turn rpm and fill 15% more motor (347) with the stock parts. Even a stock intake ported is very restrictive.
