Ive been wonderig for along time, how does everyone get around emmisions. Almost everyone on this site is running an o/r mide pipe of some sort.

If your smog stuff is gone and EGR and PCV or whatever is plugged. Can a good set of cats pass you. Or in any case, how can you register the car so that you dont have to worry about it.

I know the PCV is the pollution contral valve but what does it do. And the EGR also. Ive never read anything about them.

I dont know what it does so I dont know the use for it. LOL

I was going to take the alternator bracket off last night to sand it down but when I saw all the smog stuff on that side of the engine I wanted to get rid of it. That way when I get headers they will stand out better. I wanna get rid of the stuff purly for cosmetic reasons.lol

In my case I'm smog exempt sicne I drive less than 5000 miles/year. It is very easy to do this in our cars... you just have to know which harness to unplug. Honestly, I just got emissions where I live, so this will be my first experience with it.

the PCV is a valve that allows gases that escape passed to rings and into the crankcase to vent back into the intake tract. This is a good thing as crankcase pressure needs to be vented one way or another if not it causes power loss and can blow out seals and such. A "breather" cap does sort of the same thing but the gases vent to the atmosphere, which is an EPA no no. Also, if you run a breather and a PCV valve you run the rsik of getting unmetered air into the motor which is bad, but to do away with the PCV you must run breathers in BOTH valve covers. I run a breather with the PCV valve and it hasn't hurt me so far.

i believe PCV is positive crankcase ventilation. it pulls the fumes out of the engine case. its sorta an emisions thing but it came around because if the case fills up with fumes, it sometimes would backfire when starting hot and blow the valve covers. (bend them). so i would just leave that on. not so much of a performance hinderance anyways.

as for the emissions testing. i think a lot of people are buying specefic smog legal parts, or like my friend, is just putting the stock mid pipe back on when he has to test.

others are simply exempt due to where they live and local laws.

seeing how im going to be working in the industry, i know a ton of people in different shops and dealerships. Slide them a 20 and suddenly the offroad pipes work better than stock cats

I wanns get rid of all the smog stuff just because its there and doesn't do anything for me exept pass emmision. So I guess I realy need it but everything is so ugly under the hood with it there. Ive been under the hood cleaning for the whole day and I dont even want to try and attempt cleaning all the stuff above the passenger side header.

And seriously, do the emission guys really accept a 20 and pass you. I find it hard to believe, knowing me ill get stuck with someone who wont do it and ill fail anyways.

You have to know someone good that will pass you. Don't just walk up to someone and ask them to pass you. You also have to know how it goes down, which I don't want to discuse unless you need the info. PM me if you do.
