Paint and Body How to remove spinning front bumper studs

Literally all 6 of my front bumper studs are spinning. How the hell do I get these things off. There isn’t really room to fit a dremel in there and I tried holding them with a needle nose and it wouldn’t hold it. Any tips?

Look pretty rusty, did you spray them first with penetrating oil? Sometimes they need to soak

Yea I did, the nuts broke no problem but they just got to a point where the studs started spinning with them

I’m wondering If I could just loosen all of the studs out of the bumper and then cut them off after the bumpers off. I’m not sure if pulling those studs off would damage anything though I’ll have to check tomorrow

Edit:from my first pic it looks like it could damage the bumper. Might have to do it though. I’m going to drill a hole and replace the stud with a bolt and nut so it shouldn’t matter if I just pull that stud out and the built in washer breaks the tabs on the bumper cover. What do you guys think

On this video, they just came off. LMR has the hardware so if you need to you can just replace them.

No in that video the nuts came off like they’re supposed to. In my case the stud moves with the nut and it’s all coming out as one unit.

You can see that in this pic below and how that built in washer is starting to bend the bumper

No, i understand you, i just provided the video for reference. Not many of us take our bumpers off often. I see that you are dealing with old, weathered hardware. Its some sort of a riveted stud with a seized on nut.

Yeah, that stinks. The material that used to "stick" those nutplates has dry rotted.


The penetrating oil is a good idea. My favorite for ferrous metals that rust:

Let this stuff "chew" for a minute or so

The only other thing you might try is a small impact drill. Not a drill but an impact. The "dugga-dugga" action will help.
