How to tell what year T-5 i have. (7 or 8 tooth)

I need to get a speedo gear and i bought a used t-5 from stangparts.com. but i dunno if it is a 83-89 or 90-95 t-5. i need to know if i have a 7 or 8 tooth gear in the tranny. is there a tag on the tranny or do i have to dive in for the gear? if i have to find the gear, how do i do that?

pull the old speedo gear out take it to the local ford dealer and they will tell you what it is. The speedo gears are color coded.

IF the tag is still attached to the case, there'll be a part number on it that starts with E_ZR ....

If it's E3ZR, E4ZR, E5ZR, or E6ZR, it has a 7T drive gear.
If it's E9ZR, F0ZR, F2ZR, or F4ZR, it has an 8T drive gear.

FYI, you don't want an '83-'84 T-5 in your '87 GT and if you bought a '94-'95 T-5, you had better have acquired the matching bellhousing.
