Hey Adam... not to come off as sounding rude, but you said you swapped the motor in your probe, but you can't change the clutch in your mustang? IMO, the clutch is waaaay easier....

With money being tight for ya I would think the best bet would be to buy 4 jacks stands a jack and slap the clutch in. Swaping motors and leaving yourself w/ $100 for a semester isnt to smart. JMHO

well im trying to figure things out... right now i have about $1400 left i just checked at the atm... i have $85 comming from a friend who bought an amp from me... if i sell this intake it should fetch $200 and i think that would leave me with enough to do the swap and be ok after... i just need $ for the rest of the semester and for books at the begining of next... i already have my chem 4 and calc 2 books... so all ill need is books for 2 more classes... i do have a set of subs and an ibanez acoustic guitar i could sell as well... i think i might be able to front this... also my birth day is on the 28th so that should help... my mom said she would throw mw $100 for my birthday present... for me right now it looks like if i can get a motor for about $500 im gonna do it... because then i only total about $1100 for everything... and i might have $$$ to get a mild cam or something... i think im gonna list my explorer manifold for sale on ebay now... but it will suck if i dont end up doing the swap then im out of my manifold lol

as of right now here is the list of what i found...

99 explorer motor 70k $600
98 explorer motor 77K $600
96 explorer motor 70k $500
98 explorer motor 68k $750 (dont trust the yard though)
and im looking at another 98 tomorrow....

so ive been busy... the 99 explorer motor for $600 doesent look bad... i wish i could talk them down or something but i dont wanna be an ass...

How can you tell if the motor is a gt40 type or gt40p type with out taking off the heads???

Im really looking for a decent combo to put down 250+ at the wheels and still be a nice daily driver and not throwing alot of cash in to it... i think the GT40p is a great way to do it.... not to mention these motors have far less miles then the 205k stock 5.0 in my car....

also what cam should i use in it if i decide to buy one

the bottom right corner of the heads have the id mark. GT is regular old gt-40's and the p's are 3 lines i think

i honestly dont know about the p's. i know they will line up right but not sure about the angle thing since i have never had p's. But i know if you get a regular gt 40 head they work fine because i used to have regular old gt40 irons

i think i might be able to do it... is it worth the HP annd lower milage to get it over with now... my car is way tooo slow for me... and i think this is cheaper then HCI set up for right now... how do you thinkn a b cam or e cam will hold up with the explorer motor...

I want to figure out how much of a loss it is if i just get the 96 explorer 5.0 with the gt40 heads i found... would it be worth it or am i not gonna see gains from this motor that i would see from the gt40P

ive been reading up on here:

I always went with if it aint broke dont fix it. The easy, and dont take me wrong, thing is stick in the new clutch kit and keep your wheels rolling for now. Nothing ever cost what we think or is as simple as it sounds. Long nights and a ticked off wife proves that for me. It would be a good idea to get an engine and build it how you want it maybe over some time, instead of in a rush. Again only my opinion so hope it helps.

it is a little bit tight but i think its a waste of $$ to pay to get the clutch done when its basically half of what id pay for the swap... it would be cutting it close on $$$ but i think my balls to the wall aproach is been working so far might as well keep going...

im just stuck between the 96 (gt40) and the 99(gt40p) motors what kinda gains ect....

she goes to the track with me and stuff... it pisses her off some times... but yea she understands it some times... hell she now has a lowered probe and is looking into stangs... she just keeps me from doing stupid **** when it comes to spending $$$ on my car which is good....

but... anyone have opinions on the 96motor vs the 99 motor...

yeah but i give them some credit. like my wife, she has been here for 8 years of my hobby. its my fault for missing dinner, going straight to the garage from work then to work again without even seein her. and explaining why i need the $300 tire when she sees a $100 tire that looks the same. i call that support, maybe not so much voluntarily, but a compromise for sure. what more could ya want?

dude if cash is tight right now fix what needs fixing 1st.

Because after buying this engine, you will always somehow find a better or cheaper deal.

Plus save some cash up for the engine build and do it right the 1st time.. Once you install this engine I'm sure you would want more HP, etc ...

Plus YOU NEED TO HAVE SOME EXTRA CASH AROUND IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY ...

First off, the P heads will need different headers. Mac makes a set for the P heads.

Second... I would recommend just fixing what's broke until you have a job and can afford something decent. If you buy the Exploder engine, you'll want a cam, pushrods and roller rockers and valvesprings as well..

The best thing you can do for yourself is buy a set of tools and jackstands and LEARN your car. You will NEVER regret it. I started knowing nothing, just tackled little things... Then I did a clutch in a 95 GT... then a motor swap... By the time I was 16, I started building up my 347 car.. I started and completed the whole project by myself, money/labor/parts.. All in between school and work. It's worth it. To pay somebody to replicate my car, I would have to have spent an additional $7,000... That's a LOT of dough when you're in highschool (atleast for those of us who work for our money )

Anyway, good luck on whatever you do.
