Indy car racer Dan Wheldon dead

Me and my boys were watching the race live (it had just started) when the crash happened. Right away they put a yellow tarp over Wheldon's car. My son kept asking me why that was the only car that had a yellow tarp on it. After the drivers meeting every driver that exited that door was in tears. About 45 minutes later Randy Bernard made the announcement that they had lost Dan Wheldon.

My son is still devasted because he forgot to realize how dangerous these accidents can be. In Nascar they all would have walked away most likely. In these open wheel cars with their heads exposed and accident at 220 can be fatal.

Dan announced a few days ago he would be taking over Danica Patrick's ride for 2012-13. It's a damn shame.

May he rest in peace, proly upstairs racing with the other racers who have passed away.

Its a risk associated with racing if there wasnt a risk involved it prolly wouldnt be as much of a rush

This x10.
If it wasn't for the risk and the rush that goes with it then it wouldn't be nearly as much fun, and they can deny it all they want if it wasn't fun they they would not have raced as much as they have to get to the level they are at.
Much respect for open wheel guys.

And now the Monday morning back seat drivers are coming out, I just saw a article that was written by a guy who normally covers Tennis going on about how the track was not suitable for racing. Im sure its just the start.

They don't need to do 225 in an Indy car. In 1989 Nascar mandated restrictor plates (spacer over the carb) to slow the car down. Bobby Allison's car at Talladega blew a tire and took off, hitting the catch fence and spraying parts into the crowd. Many fans were injures because of the debris. Since then a few cars have got airborne, no injuries to drivers or fans.

This Indy race was the first since the repaving, the track is so smooth it's 10-12 MPH faster than the last time they raced on it in 2001 (only 24 cars that day, Sunday 34 cars).

The drivers were concerned with the speeds and made it known to officials. The President Randy Bernard was aware. Some drivers declined to race at those speeds. A.J. Allmendinger and Scott Speed were invited but said no thanks.

Irony, Dan Wheldon was the 2012 indy car of the future test driver this year. There are new advances which will keep the cars from flying thanks to Dan Wheldon's testing this past year. Will it be a perfect system? Of course not. The risk of driving these cars fast is why they race. We also have to say "When is the speed fast enough"? It shouldn't take death to change things but that's how it works. Dale Earnhardt's tragic death changed the cars they drive today. R.I.P.

i dont see why they have not put some type of fender system over the tires ,seems like running onto somones tire can be a terrible thing my dad was an imca modified dirt track racer for many years and has seen his share of accidents, one time he drove onto the back of somones tire and it propelled his car into the air so high the flag man could see the bottom of the car,he did not sustain any injuries but that has got to be scary.
