Did any of you tell the insurance company that it actually has a v8 in it? My dad thinks that I will be committing insurance fraud if I just go ahead and insure it as a four cylinder car even though I am going to be putting a V8 in it. He says that if I get in an accident and hurt someone and that its my fault and an adjuster comes to look at the car and sees that its not a four banger anymore the insurance company is liable to deny covering the victims medical costs because I violated the insurance contract. Does anybody have any experience with this situation?

no the vin is a 4 banger, so therefore you have a 4 cylinder in their eyes..

Agreed, they dont care. My car was a 4 cylinder originally, it has been insured as a 4 cylinder since I put the v8 in it, I got rear ended in late 2005, and everything was fine. They didn't even look under the hood, all they did was write me a check.

i would think it would cost more as a v8 then a 4 banger....they would get mad out of screwing them out of money i would look into it..but u should be fine..just if u get hit in the front and they see its a v8 they miht not cover it

My Capri is a 4 banger to V8 swap. Been that way for 15+ years. Never told my insurance company and I've been in one accident. Don't sweat it. :nice:

:stupid:
Did you ever tell them that you put a V8 in it? I keep trying to tell my dad that I have nothing to worry about but he disagrees and says that I'd be committing insurance fraud.
Tell your dad to relax. :nice:

Also, if you pay insurance on a 4-banger....they pay you out as if the car was a 4-banger if anything ever happens.

And if you blow the engine under insurance related reasons (say you drive through a deep puddle during a declared state of emergency when it woul dbe covered) they will pay you to put a 4-banger in it...not a highly modified 5.0.

So if you start with a 4-banger, and build up a nasty car...you may want to consider "agreed value insurance" anyway since you want to make sure your stuff is all covered if anything happens

I actually asked Geico when I went to insure my converted 2.3. They told me it would be pointless to try to insure it as anything other than a 2.3 because being an 88, the book value isn't any better for a 5.0 vs a 2.3.

they will probably still cover you in a accident as long as its not accident where you wreckless driving. If you car gets wrecked and they total it they will go by what a 4cyl is worth

Agreed.

I have more $$ invested in the motor than the car is worth according to the "book" so I have coverage which includes all additions and modifications to the vehicle. This way, if some idiot runs into me and totals my car I won't be out thousands of dollars. In my eyes, insurance is to protect me from other idiots, not to protect poor helpless bystanders from me running into them.

I have a 92 Thunderbird that was originally a V6 car and I swapped that for the 5.0 and I havn't had any problems. I've never been in an accident though so I couldn't tell you there. But that 1 guy is right about the vin because as far as they know it's still a l-4.

im pretty sure everyone here covered about everything i would say, but! i can call my uncle tomorrow for ya an find out exactly what it would be if you did get into an accident an whatnot. atleast then we know for a fact an then everyone will know rather then havin to find out the hard way..if it was a problem. im sure i have talked to him about this stuff b4 but i dont remember. since jesse (macn89stng) is the only one who knows what im talkin about, my uncle works for state farm in jersey an is an adjuster. him being into cars (bought a capri 2 yrs old, lucky b**tard!..this was the capri i had) as much as us he will let me know the truth.
