IS MY MECHANIC ROBBING ME?

let me explain

i didnt just say do what you want,he called and had told me the parts he wanted to add, then explained it would save me labor later, like the headers, the old ones were off so putting new ones on wouldnt be extra labor, like i said im no mechanic, and i was out of the country on vacation,so i didnt go into a huge conversation on my cell at 5$ a minute, however looks like it may have been a whole lot cheaper..lol..and there may be other things done that he didnt tewll me today,im gonna go there in the morning, get a complete list of parts and the labor, and ill post them, then i guess it will be faif to get a million posts about being finb...on the flip side of things i do know alot of mustang owners around my way,so i can at least spread the word that hes a piece of ****

you shouldnt give him any room to make decisions at all, you bring your car to a shop you say "do this this and this" thats it. So hes telling you hes saving you money by making you spend more. And telling him "im no mechanic" is a big mistake as well. I worked in 2 different shops, one corporate and one private, and private mechanics are the biggest theifs on the planet hands down, Ive seen it first hand.

i didnt tell him im "im no mechanic" i was just saying that to people here, and i just wanted to make my car faster, and yeah maybe i did trust him a little much, but i didnt want to say change the rocker arms, and the lifters be bad,and without him being able to contact me,him do the work anyhow, then me have to go back in and do work that could have been done to begin with, but like i said ill post the whole invoice tommorow, its not going to break me either way but i like most dont want to be screwed,at the same time i had just bought the car and didnt really mind spending the money to get it right, but without getting ripped off either, the guy has a huge reputation around here as being a damn good ford mechanic,so i guess i was just a little too comfy with his reputation, but i wont jump the gun until i get the whole list of work broke down

WOW for that much money you could build a 347 stroker and put some good parts on it. Like said those parts shouldnt add up to more then 4k, so 5k in labor, isnt just hours adding up. 9200 is an ubserd amount of money. And like said you may not know alot and he may have told you the parts, but telling a mechanic to do what he thinks is best is the wrost thing you can do. They make their money by screwing you over. I took my car to a VERY well known mustang shop, jake lomata, does alot of magazine test, hes screwed me over so many times, only time i take my car back now is to fix the parts they couldnt install correctly.

Find out how much he charges an hour, because even if he charges 75 bucks an hour, he would have had to put atleast 65 hours in that car, just for a hci and basic bolt ons.

well after thinking about it,im not 100% sure that i was quoated the right price,i talked to the mechanic but not the person who keeps up with the billing there, its an odd setup i guess, but theres no way in hell it should be 9200.00 because even though i told him to do extra stuff if needed he would still call and say hey you need some headers i would say how much,400 for the ceramics,no labor since the old ones are off,so i kept up with it fairly close im really confused at how it got to this total, but i didnt want to go there and ****** one of those guys across the counter if i was mistaken on anything,so i figured i would check here first, you guys seem to have plenty of knowledge on any mustang issues, but ill post the complete invoice tommorow, hopefully someone can then tell me just where im getting screwed, thanks for all the replys,im really not usually a dumbass but like i say i thought i had all the work calculated pretty much as it was being done,my figure and his are way off....well i guess ill know tommorow

That's more than I paid for my entire engine..new from intake to pan including stuff like TB, Iac,egr, injectors, maf, sesors, motor mounts, clutch, porting on the heads, block and machining, oil, filter, paint, with the only pcs reused were my balancer, fuel rails and flywheel...that's stttteeeeeep.

CHP has much to offer under $9000

306 Street Fighter GT Kit

Long Block 13914 $3,999.99

just go get a DETAILED invoice of exactly everything that added up to 9k. Theres no way the parts added up to more then 4k because youd have a badass 302 or decent 347 for that much, and 65 hrs to install all that? He must have been charging you for holding the car in his shop too.

mustang

well i only no one thing from what i have heard i would say you have payed alot to much specially since it is us dollars i run a performance shop here and coulde have built a very nice motor and added quite afew new toys for that kind of money i would like to see pics and documentation of what he did and the bill it seams crazy

9200 really high. I have talked to two of the people around here. One of them being Justin at JPC ( www.jpcracing.com ) and he quoted me 1/6 that price.

After you put that much money in it, you could have a really...REALLY nice dart block 306/331/347.

EDIT: 1/6th the price for labor, not parts.

I would say that there is probrably 3500-4000 grand in parts. You also said painting and polishing which both can be expensive add labor to it and I can see it getting close to around 7500. I know some places around here charge close to a 1000 dollars just for a charger install which is far easier that what the mechanic did. Im not saying the price isnt high but its probrably not as bad as some make it out to be. Unfortunatly when you have someone else do the work labor adds up.

complete AFR heads 1500
polished cobra int. 600
new TB 150
new cam 150
t-chain 75
radiator 400
clutch 300
headers 250
roller rockers 250
gaskets and fluids 150
about 25 hrs of
install time at 50-75
dollars an hour 1250-1750

plus time for piant,
prep,supplies. ???????

Get a copy of the itemized bill and take it to a few other reputable shops and see what they would have charged. There may be some room to negotiate the bill. Good luck.

If you are getting work done on your car by a mechanic get a quote upfront before he lays a finger on the car. He should have been able to tell you how many hours it would take and what his hourly rate is. He will also probably mark up the prices of the parts, so comparing his prices on the parts to Summit is an unfair comparison. He has overhead to pay, staff wages to pay etc, so he needs to mark stuff up as well as charge his labor rates to turn some kind of a profit. I don't think $9200 is probably that far off - it ain't cheap, and there were probably better ways to spend your money. Your only way out, is if he did unauthorized work, then you are not on the hook for that. But if he didn't do anything unauthorized (which is why you want to get written quotes each time), then you are on the hook. Sorry bro - but hey, have fun driving the car!!
