Ok, ive been looking for a 1999-2004 GT for months everytime I semi take my time to buy one it gets sold. I found a 2000 model GT but it had damage to bumper and the foam under bumper was broken. it has 156k miles and when I checked the dipstick there was just a little oil on it. so I told the guy id think about it and get back to him. he emailed me stated he added a qt of oil and then it was full. the car drove ok but the cracked bumper and the oil scared me. he is asking 5500 but stated he would take 5k cash. just tell me what you guys think.

I would walk away, who knows how well this guy has taken care of his car mechanically wise... Don't buy another persons headache because they didnt take care of service. But if you really want it try taking it for a test drive like a 30 min one to get a good feel of the car. Other than that I would offer him $4500. For about 4000 more dollars you can find good low mileage GT's at least in my area I can...

Even given the budget I'd walk away from this one. The want for another Stang is a powerful beast, I'll give you that. But 156K is a lot of mileage to be put on a car, even the ever sturdy 4.6, and that's decent car guy mileage. This fella selling this car doesn't strike me as a car guy. Low on oil when a prospective buyer gets there, and never even bothered to fix a couple hundred dollars worth of cosmetic bumper cover? I shudder to think what he and anyone else who may have owned that car in the past may or may not have put it through over the years.
The deal-buy's are out there if you have patience and diligence. I picked up my 99 GT 35th Anniv Limited edition at a local dealer with 59k on the odo, for 8k. I wasn't even really in the market just happened to come by an add for it and pounced. There are low mileage New Edge cars out there for decent prices, you've just got to out-wait your own impatience and you will be rewarded.

Best of luck either way, though!

There is a young kid down the road from me that hangs with my step son that recently bought a 2002 GT to replace the 2000 Gt he totaled being a D/A. The car he bought was acually in great overall shape condition wise but who-ever owned it before him ragged the hell out of it mechanically speaking and had a ton of miles. He's had a ton of trouble with in latley. You gotta figure that a car with that amount of miles will need stuff like normal wear and tear items and general maintenance. An owner that had a car like that but has a nice thick folder of service records and reciptss is worth his salt. Thats what sold me when I bought my 96'. That way I knew what had or had not been dealt with so I knew what I might be getting into ahead of time.

The oil thing would have turned me off quick though.

I had to shop around for weeks to find a decent Mustang. I paid $3500 for a 97 Gt vert. It had a brand new top and tons of maint records and most of the work was recent. New windshield, tires, tune up and oil change, Alignment, brakes, I had to do a few small things to get it to where I was happy. It did have 140k on it but I could tell it was well taken care of. For 5k you can find a pretty nice new edge around here. Don't buy someone elses problems.

I'd also agree, walk away from that, just the fact that the oil was a quart low gives you an idea of the care he took for the car. It's probably an indication that it has been consuming some oil, at 156K miles, I wouldn't doubt it needs a top end rebuild. I'd offer $4K, if he didn't want that, then there's better deals out there.

I just picked up an 04 40th Anniversary with 58K miles, vortech supercharger, intake, exhaust, tuned, etc, aftermarket parts have 10k miles, car was obviously loved very much, for 10K. There are deals out there, just gotta be your time to find it!
