Shows I'm a newbie to this board! First post and it's already in the wrong forum! I must've hit the wrong "New Thread" button, but now I know! Anyway, I'm the new owner of an '84 Mustang GLX and I can't say enough good things about it!
My main question is this: Are there any quirks about this model that I need to know about? Like how it doesn't want to turn over too well after the engine has heated up. I drove it 22 miles, parked it, and it had a heckuva time turning over to put it into the wash bay here at work. It still turned over, but it almost sounded like the battery was drained (though it wasn't). And there is a STRONG fuel smell (I've smelled the same thing in other cars of this era, like my old '85 F-150). The car needs very little in the way of mechnical care, runs like a champ! Only needs some cosmetic fix-ups, like a new convertible top and paint. Just wanted to say "Hello" to you all and say that now, after having driven a Mustang, I know why people love them so much!

welcome, the hot start problem is pretty common...most people just replace the starter i believe and it fixes it. you could also put a heat shield on it. as for the fuel smell, replace your sensors give it a tune up

hey welcome to the family, im the proud owner of an 84 lx vert as well, lemme ask a question for anyone who knows to answer, is there any difference in the lx and glx/gl? these models arent mentioned much and i was just wonderin what they were. anyhow...

if you have an auto tranny then ur equipped with central feul injection (the weaker cousin of efi) and will probably end up switching to carb or efi eventually

if you have a t5 though then youre still carbed and rdy to go

Yeah it does... but hopefully not for much longer. It was a California car and has TONS of emissions stuff on it. My plan is to slowly strip it down, get all that emissions stuff off of it, and mod it out at some point down the road. I'm planning on keeping this car street legal, so I can drive it, but also making it run the fastest times I can with the money that I have. I'm sure you guys understand, it all can't be done at once. I'm living the American Dream here: A mortgage, a car payment on a minivan, a wife, a son, life insurance, etc. Dang... the American Dream is EXPENSIVE!!!! The good news is that I won't be driving it much in the winter (if at all, MN winters are rough on cars) and I'll have that time to really get down and dirty with it.
This weekend will more than likely be a weekend of looking over the car, making lists, and seeing what I can pull off the car and still make it legal.

She's carbed and it's a manual. It is, to me, a perfect car to restore and run at the track. 'Course LOL, I have to put a different exhaust on her... she's too quiet for me! I'd like to get me some of those "echo chambers". Heard them once and they just sound cool! Don't know what the technical term is or how to even describe the way they sound, but if you've heard them, you'll know what I'm talking about.

mufflers?

Yeah, they're mufflers... but they have a nice sound. Not that pop that you get from straight pipes, but not quiet either. As I said, the sound is hard to describe... Let me see here, how to describe it? It sounds like... like an echo, I guess. They're still loud, but it sounds like straight pipes from a distance, kinda... I dunno, it's just hard to describe. Real deep, semi-subdued; you can really hear the engine, but without that popping sound of real loud pipes. Dig? Kinda like that I guess. I just LOVE the way they sound at idle, but they do get kinda loud when you gun 'er. They sound pretty sweet. They have a sound byte I think at the Flowmaster website... I'll have to take a quick peek and then post the link. Back in a minute!
