The old CAI.

the new K & N..as you look...see that the Granitelli is pushed far into the adaptor

old set up...

see the reducing end of the MAF.....

When moving away from the oem meter I seized the opportunity to move
away from the flange mount

I like how you have more options to clock the meter and it just doesn't
look so clunky :)

Then again ... Its not like I got a show Stang :rlaugh:

neither do I Grady.....neither do I........

I am thinking about going to the track Friday just to prove or disprove my problem...I'll take the old CAI and if I get this pop/hesitation....switch it out and see if it still happens....

Grady...don't know if I told ya or not........with the U/D's and the K N I raised my traps up to where I thought they should be....and a better ET..........U and JT sold me on those....:nice:

Well ... Its a start :nice:

Now ... Its time to start thinkin about a R E A L transmission ;)

You know I'm only kiddin :rlaugh:

Glad something I said worked for someone :D

Then again ... If the truth be told on that one ......

I was just followin JT thunder about them there pulleys :)

Grady

You would crack up if saw how many 94/95's I look for thar are wrecked.....if I could get all the parts in one shot...................

then my fav stang would have 3 pedals...........:D

I can't believe you're serious :nono:

But you've already done spent that money on your trans ;)

I mean ... how are you gonna find some sucker :(
I mean ... how are you gonna get your money back out of that aode :)

I know I poke a bit of fun at the autos :)
but
I really did have a Mamma Jamma C4 once upon a time in a little 66 Coupe

It was impressive :D
but
More than impressive ... It was boring
Once was more than enough for me :bang:

Everybody needs to do what makes them happy :Word:

I just gotta shift gears in my Hot Rod :D

Grady

Hey Will. Ya know, I'm slow and still a little lost but I dont see anything really concerning in terms of the actual ducting (it being pushed or bunched up, etc). The underhood-filter and turbulence is still in my mind though. I still might try clocking the meter a bit and see if it helps. Or rig up a shield of some sort (driver side of the air filter. I think cardboard would work for some OhighO desert testing. :D ).

Oh, it was Mr Grady all the way with the K&N and U/D's. :nice:
I don't even talk about either one much.

What's the black thing on the front of your passenger inner fender?

bout time you showed up....must be nice to have the $ to golf all day and chat all night....u r about as nocturnal as I am....the black thing....if it's on the ground it's one of my many drill combo's.....if it's attached.....
I don't think I am conveying my thoughts properly JT.....the old piping kinda bunched up...that why I cut the 90 bend out of the fender and ran it straight.......the issue I am questioning now is that MAF is about 2 to 3 inches into the stock tubing and I'm not so sure is it sealed 100 percent under heavy load....It runs fine daily playing......the time it does see...but when I had my foot through the floorboard at hi rpm it made a kinda popping....like one loud burst of air...the car hesitating just for second and then shifting...it did it once each run...3 out of 4 times...whether I manually shifted or left in D.....once 1st to 2nd and then twice 2nd to 3rd gear....may have have a experiment....and for that.....I require the track......

muffler004.webp

this is the best pic to show it.......the part of the MAF that enters to the left is 2 to 3 inches into the black piping.....the diameter is way to small at the end and it then expands and a small angle.......I have the bolt as tight as I can get it but not sure if it is a issue at WOT......

Will, I totally get ya now. My lack of experience with a stock inlet is showing up here (I've never worked on a car with one :rlaugh: ).

It's simple MacGyver, you wrap duct tape around the MAF 'outlet' flange until it's the same OD as the ID of the rubber intake duct. :spot:

:rlaugh:

For quick diagnostics, I'd consider taping the crap out of that connection (to try and increase the certainty that it's air tight).

More permanently (but not expensive): The only thing I'd be able to cobble together is: to measure the OD of that MAF housing. Then hit the home store - see if the plumbing section has a rubber doo-hickey (Fernco type connectors). Put that one the MAF flange and slide the whole enchilada into the rubber inlet tubing.

As it is now, I can imagine that you could see possible seepage (unmetered air) during transient throttle maneuvers.

Oh, no golf for me. It was 100* today - I'm not stupid. I was pulling the front suspension apart on the Camaro.

Sorry I didn't find this on my own Will, I don't venture into the land of sn95's too often :(
(between JT and Grady, I'm not really needed over here. )

Here is a quick sketch just to see if I understand this correctly...

If there is not an adequate seal between the MAF and the stock inlet tube, then that is going to cause problems. This would allow the engine to draw in unmetered/unfiltered air. Not the same as a vac leak, but it will still cause problems with the AFR.

Also, I sketched in a little airflow (a little exagerated, but it illustrates the point) to show how the conical filters can provide poor sampling when mounted directly to the MAF meter.
Just adding in a couple of inches of straight tubing before the MAF meter can make a huge difference...

good luck,
jason

Jt...that is Red Green all the way............and I dig it............

Jason...thanks for dropping in...and the drawing is dead on......and I get what u r talking about.......I'll report my findings and try and fab something up

Will

Good Stuff Jason :nice:

I've thought about how my shorty ProM 80 has the filter bolted on the
meter straight from the factory.

I wanted two things to be in place with my home made concoction
and
Those two things to be of the highest priority

1) Draw cool air
2) No bends

That dad gum meter/filter is so friggin big :fuss: :bang: :chair:

You just don't got a lotta room to work with when you look at it all :(

Who knows

I just might have to put in place some different things based upon
that excellent info you have shared with us :D

You are always welcome here and I've always seen your contributions
here as a benefit to all :nice:

Hey Jason ... Why not do like JT and just buy a 94-95 and we can then
benefit from more of your input :)

That idea is without a doubt .....
Motivated by selfish reasons on my part :rlaugh:

Grady

Grady, I'm in total agreement about Jason. I certainly would not mind having his fox - quite a nice little set-up. :nice:

For those that don't know, I recruited Jason for this particular issue. He was more than kind enough to pitch in with his usual excellent info. I've done this before and he always drops what he's doing and jumps right in and assists whomever is needing assistance or has a question. I had my thoughts about Will's issue but not any experience with a similar set-up and wanted some concrete backing - hence asking Jason. :nice:
He's truly in the league of elite few here whom not only know a boatload but are willing to go the extra mile and help guys out. :nice: There's another guy whom does that too. He looks like an older version of Crockett, lives in Texs and drives a fully tuned SN95. :D

Now that Jason's here, he and Grady can bounce ideas off one-another; folks won't have to listen to my half-arshed thoughts anymore (not that they did before).

Will, your quit wit lost me with the Red-green thought. It might have been a reference to my backwoods fix-it ideas. That's just how I am. Total function over form and I'll do lots of quick little tests before making a nice part or buying somethig - sometimes it saves me some money.

The plastic thing in the bottom left corner of this pic (it goes up the inner fender) was what I couldnt figure out before. I dont think I have one of those. :p

JT......the Red Green comment was about the duct tape.......every time I watched him he fixed something with duct tape.........he cracked me up :rlaugh:

the black piece covers my head lights and goes all the way across.....you can lift up the corners to get the headlights.... iirc.........my old 6 vert had it too....

Ah yes,
The Red Green show!
"If the ladies don't find you handsome, at least let 'em find ya' handy"
You may not get the great Canadian tv down there JT...
Monty Python and the Red Green show... :canada:

Grady,
Packaging does seem to be where most of us get hosed on MAF systems...
There just isn't enough real estate under the hood of these cars.
I'm currently trying to figure out how to get 4" tubing in place for a 90mm LMAF. :bang:

'Flow straighteners' are another option to help solve some of these kinds of issues.
The stock Fox 55mm MAF had a wire mesh straightener.
I've seen some GM stuff with 'honeycomb' straighteners.

In the below pic...
The best solution I can see, would be to have a straight tube running between the TB and inner fenderwell. The air filter could be mounted on the outer side of the fenderwell. The MAF meter could then be located a half-way between the TB and fenderwell.
I would think that would do fairly well
