It is going to be 60 and suuny today, so I peeled the cover off the convertible and drove her to work. Its been months since I had the car out. Stopped to fill up and she took $50 worth of gas...

I thought to myself what the heck... When I bought my first fox back in the 80's, I could fill up for $15... things sure have changed...

It got up to $6.09/gallon here in NY yesterday. I almost crashed into a light pole when I saw the sign out in front of the Mobil station.

Somebody is getting rich off of all of this, but it isn't any of us...

If the "obamanation" in the White House wants to do something to show the people of this country that he wants to improve things, he needs to start using American oil resources to level the price. There are oil deposits here in the US in the Gulf of Mexico, in oil shale in the western states, Texas and Louisiana sufficient to provide for this country's needs for many years into the future. That will give the energy companies time and incentive to figure a way to make cheap fuel out of garbage and sunshine . None of the rabid environmentalists wants an oil field or a refinery in their community, or in anyone else's either. With today's refining processes, and pollution control, there should be minimum impact on the environment anyway. I grew up in Port Arthur, Texas and there were oil refineries all around where I lived. It stunk at times, and the allergies would flare up, but gas was 32 cents a gallon for premium. There were lots of good paying jobs at those refineries, and many companies made money supplying them with the things they needed to operate the refinery. I think that most of us could tolerate the small problems if it meant a big cut in gas prices and more good jobs. Four bucks a gallon will buy a big bottle of allergy pills at Walmart...

Holy Crap $6.09, that's nuts. Here is S. Florida 87 Octane is $3.95 and Diesel is $4.90 on average. I filled up my 4-banger 34MPG Daily Driver and it cost me $50. A few months ago it was like $31.

Wasn't there a Presidential Nominee who said he'd lower fuel to $2.99 per gallon if he was elected. At $7-$8 per gallon I'm voting for that D-bag.

We really need more refineries in a bad way too. Our existing refineries are operating damn near 24/7 as it is.

While I am not happy with the cost per gallon, I would rather keep our natural resources for use later, than tap them now and be really screwed once they are gone. It is a fine line that must be walked...

I like the idea of buying up all the worlds oil... then drilling here once it's gone and saying f**k you to every other country

While I understand your concept here, what jrichker is saying has a great deal of validity-if memory serves, many of the folks who estimate our available natural resources within CONUS vary anywhere between 2040-2050 just for crude oil and oil shale deposits-and that's not even counting the stuff available north of ANWAR and the gulf of mexico. Then count in all the oil that's creeping up by itself off the west coast and we'd be alright. But, since we can't drill in some of those places, the Chinese are finding ways to cross drill and tap oil fields under places we should already be drilling.

And the environmentalists who don't want the pipeline built from Canada to down here aren't thinking things through very well. We're still buying the stuff from the middle east and truckin' those leaky containers all the way across the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic. If we don't buy the Canadian oil, they'll surely sell it to the Chinese-there's more leaky barges headed across the Pacific...so, the activist crowd doesn't always think things through...apparently, there are some that think WE are the ONLY nation ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH that pollutes...when in reality, our processes are probably some of the most refined available.

Another thought, the people in charge of this whole sham are using the media to sensationalize it and I've gotten to the point where I really want nothing to do with television because of said nonsense. I recall a commercial where teenagers/young adults were standing around with the thought bubbles floating around their heads, and the one starts spouting off about how we need to stop pollution and environmental impact due to drilling-the people that believe this have only been shown accidents like the Exxon oil spill or the one here a couple years ago in the gulf, and have forgotten the thousands of holes we've explored and extracted oil from without incident over the past 100 years.

Last one I promise-while I like the thought of E85, I don't think it's smart to burn food...corn, although a good source of the fuel, is a food item. It must be cultivated (to include pesticides to ensure greater yield), harvested, processed, distributed, stored, etc. Then think about the cultivation, harvesting and distributing-they require petroleum powered vehicles to make this work...hmmm

just a couple thoughts...it's early and I'm not all here yet.

I'm not an environmentalist.
On one hand I hate the fact that we are dependent for oil from the middle east, and that oil prices are set by a bunch of "speculators" who are guessing what the demand will be. Even when the demand is down, (like now) prices continue to rise. The media seems content to report that "prices are up due to the tensions in Iran, the increased demand from China, and the refineries are not producing as much as needed" (this was the actual B/S line from NBC last week when I last paid attention). That excuse never changes. There never seems to be any investigative report that looks into the real reason for the pricing, and I just can't figure that one out.

I'd be content if we were self sufficient to the point of isolation.

On the other hand, we can drill a million holes that never have any incident, but it only takes one BP gulf oil disaster to really f uck things up here. Living 250 miles from the incident, I got to see first hand some of the side effects of putting millions of barrels of raw crude into the ocean. Don't let anybody fool you, the Gulf of Mexico didn't think that all of that oil pouring into it was minuscule compared to the billions of gallons of water that make it up. Nor did the fish, birds, or people that lived in and worked around it.
Yet, I heard that on more than one occasion.

I'd like to see natural gas used more effectively, I like to see the sun and the atom used way more. I'd like to drill here but keep a short leash on the Oil companies doing the drilling. AND I wish there was a way to regulate the price of gas based on company forecasted production, not some "nervous speculators" who just got done buying pork bellies, and corn futures.

<sigh>
As much as I would LOVE to end our dependence on foreign oil, we simply can't. Why?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peak_oil

Although it can be argued on the exact date it happened/will happen, most will agree that we will reach a point at which our domestic oil production simply will not meet our demands. Texas and Alaska have peaked already and have been on a steady decline for years now. Many states are in the same boat.

"Well why aren't we using more of the oil sands/shales???"

- EROEI, or Energy Return On Energy Invested. Why are the oil companies going to spend $.80 to make $1 when they can still spend $.40 (this figure is purely an example, I don't know the actual figures).

"Well, there's still solar power!"

-Yes, BUT to solar panels require the use of rare earth metals, which the name gives away why it isn't feasible.

"Well, there's always _______ power"
See EROEI statement above.

So the way I see it, we're dependent on foreign oil for the foreseeable future. The price problem lies with the speculators and the 'Gubment rules and regs that keep driving up the barrel prices.

Yeah, Romney. I don't believe it, and I'm as Republican as they come. They're all liars, every one of em. Romney invented Obama care (origionally coined Romney care), and Obama adopted it and changed the name.

How many promises has Obama broken, and how many lies has he told? Go to you tube and search Obama lies, there's a clip that runs for over five minutes of him contradicting himself over and over....

Any of them will sell you the Brooklyn bridge if you just vote for them.

It must be a pre requisite that in order to participate on a web forum (and to be one of the more vocal) you have to be republican.

I'm registered Democrat. I voted for Obama, and I hate (and still hate) GWB w/ a passion that makes any Obama hater pale by comparison.
Firstly, I am party to completely, and utterly hijacking the hell outta this thread
.

Despite the choice I made in presidents, of the issues that define us as Democrat or Republican, I sway more to the republican side in my beliefs. I won't go into each detail on what I believe, but lets just say that I agree to most conservative values "with exceptions".

For instance: I agree. You have the right to own and bear arms. You can own hand guns, shotguns(for hunting) and any rifle designed (for hunting ) made. What you should not be able to own is any rifle intended to be put in the hands of the military for the sole purpose of "inflicting human casualties".
I "give" my half,....Despite the fact that all gun violence occurs w/ "approved" non-assault weapons, I still believe that it's the right of the people to own a gun. Cognizant of the fact that there are people out there right now that are legal, everyday folks that should NEVER have a hand gun in their purse, holster, or pocket. Put a gun in everybody's hand, and watch the violence escalate when an "argument" or a smart assed comment becomes a shooting. But like I said, I support the 2nd amendment,...with exceptions.

The other side, on the other hand, gives nothing. No exceptions. It's not enough to be able to own a 9mm composite Glock w/ a 30 round clip, you need an AK47, AR15 or any of the other weapons a google search can provide.
http://www.military.co.il/asg/Category_7.html
For "self defense".
Assault and self defense do not share the same meaning.
The NRA Mantra: "Guns don't kill people, people w/ guns kill people"

Well, yeah,....and then there's Bernie, who got called out for being a wimp by a co worker. Legal gun owner. Got pissed at a coworker and mowed down 6 people in his office because he was tired of taking s hit.
Bernie was a "future whack job". A time bomb that showed no outward evidence of his potential explosive yield. 40 years ago Bernie would've just hung himself. But now because it's so easy, Ole Bern just went into Dick's sporting Goods, filled out some paper work, and killed 6 people and himself 14 days later.

If there is a NRA supporting member that agrees w/ me on this, I'll be floored.

This is how come we view Washington and politicians as worthless, and all liars. They represent us. I put them there to support my beliefs, and you put them there to support yours. If I lose, and nothing gets done to support my beliefs you win, I elect another guy. My guys know that (as does yours). Because they don't wanna go home, and to be sure that they don't "lose the fight", they posture, and block. Compromise is a sign of weakness, and opens a door to more things being "taken away," so they dig in and refuse to move.

They tell us that it'll be different,....They tell us they can get it done,....Problem is,.... what you want, and what I want aren't always the same thing. It's why it's never gonna be different, and why nothing ever gets done.
