Just got my MGW shifter, How do i remove the console to install??

Just got it but the instructions are for a sn95 more so then a fox. what parts do i need to remove to install this shifter? and more important how do i remove them? Amazing looking piece by the way

Unscrew your shift knob.
Take off the trim plate around the counsol around the shifter.
Take off your boot.
Theres your shifter.
Take the mounting bolts out.
Pry off the shifter from the trans.
Follow the steps for install and I think thats it.

I found it much easier to just yank the entire center console. the bolts for the lower boot are a bear to get to if you don't.

Just pop off the trim around the boot.
The black plastic sort of rectangular piece.
It is held on with 4 clips at the corners.
Just get your fingers under one corner and gently pull up untill it pops off, then do the same on the other 3 corners.

Then R&R the shifter.

Piece of cake.

Then, let us know how you like that new fangled shifter.

Don't bother removing the whole console. Just grab the upper boot by the inside and pull up on each corner. Then grab an 8mm wrench and remove the lower boot. The two under the console are a pain. It takes a few minutes to get them off.

Yeah they are a pain. What I did was this. For the inner boot (the only PITA to do,) just grab a 8mm wrench, and turn em out slowly. And don't lose a little clip that clips onto the metal in tunnel, that gives your bolt threads something to "bite" on. I lost one, now I have a loose bolt. . There also a bit of a pain to get the bolts back in place on the reinstall. Just get em into the hole. mash down hard on the boot, and try to force the bolts into the hole. They should just slip in, and then just tighten her up. Adjust the stops, shifter in third, get the stop about to touch, back out one round, check first and 5th for clearance, put the mojo on the stop. Repeat for 2nd, 4th, and reverse. Good luck

don't know if there's more room in the 87+ foxes but in mine it was such a huge PITA to get to the two front bolts on the lower boot. They are pretty far up under and there is very little clearance for a wrench with the stock shifter in the way. There are all of 8 little phillips screws holding the entire console down. Takes me all of two minutes to remove it. I'd rather that than spend the time hunting around blindly for bolts i can't see.

what do u guys mean by the inner boot? are u talking about the ruber piece under the leather shift boot. i decided im not gona pull the console so all i have to do it undo the shift knob, and just kinda pop that black plastic trip out around the boot? do i have to pull the boot out of the trim? hahah as u can see im very confused by this simple task

The boots are on there. If you need any pictures of these parts in the car, let me know and I will get you some. No don't take the boot off the trim because they are stapled together. The lower is also a one piece.

Thank you very much, that clears it up. any tips on removing the trim? are those clips that hold the trim in place prone to breaking? also how do people replace a old shift boot if the trim and boot is together by staples? how do they get that clean factory look?

To remove the trim, pop it up close to the clips. The clips are in the corners. If you look on the page in that link, you will see the clips. They are attached to plastic tabs that are part of the console. The clip may pop off, that's fine, just don't break the tab. I guess you can take the boot off the cover to replace it, then just connect another to it. Once you get to the bolts for the shifter, be careful. If the bolts are on tight, put some PB on them so they loosen. I just leaned into two of those and broke the heads off last time I took out my t5. The threads had to be drilled out.

Damn, Im kinda bummed. I ordered my shifter with the red handle about 2 weeks ago. I want it! I went and got a J-yard boot yesterday for free. Gonna try the half boot thing when i install the shifter.

What kit did you order? Maybe the red handles are done now? Thanks

Anyone got some reviews on the shifters (your experience). I want one but have a 3550, doesnt look like they make them for the 3550's....yet.

those ratcheting box end wrenches worked well for removal of the front inner boot bolts (8mm).

There's a short review on stangnet homepage by CHarris. Some good writeups at www.fordpower.net forums. Also a thread i did here titled something like "MGW shifter install pics and opinions" . I understand they will be produced for the 3550's.

Removing the entire center console isn't such a bad idea if you want it done right.

To remove the center console, you'll have to start from the back seat of the car where your center console armrest or armrest delete plate is and slowly undue all the bolts holding it down from the back right up to the front. Upon removing it, be carefull that you unplugged the mirror controller and the cigarette lighter plug. Then just lift off. This way you can undo and tighten the bolts up correctly.

Which install method is better. using the supplied silicon gasket they provide or using High temp gasket maker? Both options are refered to in the instructions. I am thinking the gasket maker cuz I like things bolted down tightly. With the provided gasket it says not to torque it down too hard. THX.
