255/45/17 is the biggest I would go on a 8 inch wheel.Yeap, get some bigger wheels. Don't go above 255 on 8" wheels, 275 on 9" wheels, 295 on 10" wheels and 315 on 10.5" wheels.
Let me rephrase what I said previously.
SAFELY don't go above 255 on 8" wheels, 275 on 9" wheels, 295 on 10" wheels and 315 on 10.5" wheels. Sure, you can fit a 315 on an 8" wheel but it's not safe. Do what you want (because you will anyway) but I would say safely I wouldn't run anything bigger than 255 on an 8" wheel. The chance of rolling it off the rim is greater with a 275 or 295 tire. Places like Tirerack won't even sell it to you.
It may not "be safe" but I have 275/40s on a 8" wheel and have had my car over 150mph several times, on a daily basis over 120. And never had any problem, not to mention I only run 18 psi in them. Discount Tire Direct will sell them to you and cheaper that Tirerack anyways. I agree 295 is way to wide, but 275 isn't no big deal. especialy if its nitto they seem to be a little more narrow than other brands.
