Leaf Spring Suggestions

I need to replace the rear leaf springs on my '67 so I can put my wheels and tires back on without it bottoming out and rubbing the tires. I have seen some 4 1/2 leaf mid-eyes that I think will work. My question is, I already installed some 620 lb. drop springs on the front, so the car sits level now. I am worried about putting rear springs on and it sitting lower in the rear.

Also, any suggestions on which company to get them from or which brand would help too. They all seem pretty much the same from all the different mustang suppliers, except for the Grab-A-Trak from Mustangs Unlimited. Thanks for the help.

If you are worried about the back being too low, use standard eye 4 1/2 leafs. If you have original leafs, any new spring will probably raise it considerably.

When I replaced the leaf springs I just had the spring company re-draw them to a higher spec....to which they sat too high.... so I took them back and had them draw them to a slightly lower spec...and now after 20 years they still sit perfect.

I had the luxury of having a spring company maker in the same city I live in ,with friend that worked at the service counter.

I put a set of 5 leaf mid eys from Laurel Mountain Mustangs on my 67 this past winter. I have only put about 1.5 miles on her. Had to drive her to my Fathers shop, as I ran out of room in mine. She rides pretty stiff but it is livable. She actually sits about the same as the original 40+ year old saggy springs did. Which looks pretty good. I just got tired of her bottoming out all the time with the old springs on it. I don't have any pictures of her as she has been on jack stands for a while now, doing a T5 install at the moment.

I suggest installing proper bumpstops. Regardless of which springs you choose to run,
the axle should hit the bumpstops before the tires rub

I run the 4-1/2 leaf rev eyes and my tire is about 1/2"-1" from the wheel well.

Thanks for the help. Still not sure which ones I am going to buy. I will probably go with the 4 1/2 standard eye for now and see how it sits.

If you want to upgrade to a stiffer leaf but with better ride and faster reflexes, you might consider fiberglass mono-leafs from Flex-a-form (get them from Moneymakerracing.com). More expensive ($400 vs $200) , but it will save a lot on weight (8lbs each instead of the stock 4 leaf's 38lbs each or the 5 leaf's 45 lb each heft). Since I put mine on I have had no regrets and am always amazed at the lateral stiffness and superior rebound from my old steel leaf springs. Just a thought.

Oh, and the eyes are reverseable with the FAF springs (although you have to be careful when removing and reinstalling the eyes so as not to damage the ends and so as to get a good bond again). I dropped 1/2" when I reversed the spring eyes.

I will look into the FAS springs. I like that they are lightweight, since I will be installing them by myself, and like that I can reverse the eyes if it sits too high or too low. I still have a couple of weeks until I make my purchase. Thanks.

Here are some pics of the FAF springs. Sorry for the dirt, but the car is street driven.

Front spring eye. Spring eyes are bolted in. I had an engine oil leak and it spraycoated everything under the car

Do your springs use the shackles in the rear like traditional leaf springs do? I can't tell from the pictures.

we also have the flex form springs, although we havn't had much time on the street, we are happy with them. they use the stock shackles . ours are 225 # springs.

I have heavy duty aftermarket shackles but the stock ones will work. FAF supplies the bushings both front and back, so the stock lower shackle bushings aren't needed.

I have the 200lb-in springs. They compare in road stiffness to probably a 165# 4 1/2 leaf or so, but they react much more quickly. They were a great upgrade.
