Let's Talk Combo Type Choices!

I have to agree with 383 on this one. I simply do not want to wait until 3500 and I am not going to be revving at that RPM at a stop light for sure. I want it at 2000 which is obviously why I have the setup I do. I've got killer power from 2000 - 6500 now.

But my preferences really don't matter and I don't fault any of your for you preferences but my understanding is that for the focus of this thread, Grady wants it to come on earlier than 3500-3700.

"Fact is he already makes decent power with his lil 302 build to hold its own til 3 grand. "

Yep that makes sense too but I thought he wanted more power now not the same below 3500.

Well folks

We all have ideas about what we want :D

I can say I've had full on race cars
and
All the way back to stock ... like my little GT was when I got it

We used to sneek the race car out on the street every now and then

Fun
but
Risky & Impractical :(

I like to keep a low profile ;)

When I get on it ... I don't wanna attract every Cop in town :nono:

I usually cruise around with the little woman and just punch it a bit
every now and then

I like the way it feels when you are at low rpm's and you ease into the
skinny pedal in 3rd or 4th without shifting to a lower gear :D

If you ain't got any torque at that rpm ... Nothing is gonna happen :Word:

Again ... its all about ... APPLICATION ...

All that rubber burnin and rpm screamin don't appeal to me :nono:
Well
It don't most of the time :rlaugh:

Now ... The cars you have seen in the latest graph ........
Both of them are gonna be very impressive
but
They are different in how they make their power

I can't see either one being all correct OR all wrong ;)

I gotta say I'm kinda looking at the possibility of having the best of
both or at least seeing how much of a compromise you would make
when you choose one or the other

Again ... I'm just kinda ... kickin the tires ... on these two blower types :D

There is no way to explain this unless you've been in it? lol.. Turbo cars are fun! Centri S/C's are fun and i guess KB could be fun too, but dont knock a vortech for its lack of instant wheel spinning power, you arrive at 3500 rpm pretty fast and you dont have to hit that rpm to feel the blower, 1 psi and you feel a difference. the sound the feel and being slammed into my seat is awesome. Post pics when you are done ;p poor steeda #19 if only it had a better TQ curve it wouldnt have made my pull look like garbage up there.

I definitely understand the great feeling of not having to downshift when in 3rd or 4th and feeling that massive torque pull. It's the exact same feeling as a crotch rocket 600 vs 1000. Some people say 1000s are so impractical for the street. I 100% disagree because that feeling of not having to downshift and having gobs of power down low is a great feeling. You don't get anything from a 600 without downshifting.

I mean dont kid yourself I am all for power down there, I have a turbo after all, but I'm just trying to look at it from a positive stance from both angles, as Grady is.

KB is just nice because the power is so instant you don't notice it kicking in. Theres 400hp Hondas out there spinning to 8500RPM to make it......and we usually laugh at their power curve.

I like my HP & TQ curve like I like my rear tires....FAT

I am glad we can agree that we all have our own preferences and I would enjoy riding in ANY ONE of these rockets! :nice:

After looking at Grady's graphs, I would personally pick this fellow Matt's car. It wasn't til after I looked at the curves that I noticed it was KB. Both are very impressive though. Although, I thought Dizzy_ax, you had another pull with some adjustments or did I read that wrong?

I gotta throw this out ... but ... You did point it our in this post :nice:

I been all along thinking :D

Jon has no problem with :nono:

LOW END TORQUE :rlaugh:

I found another Vortech pull I forgot I had :nice:

Honestly ... up until lately ... Most of my focus has been on NA combos :)

I put it up next to Jeff's (Dizzy_ax) combo

I also put my combo in so I could easily make a comment or two about
what I see here

I don't know much other than what you see about this combo

You see he only runs 30's and has NO TUNE

I'd gotta think he would be running a fmu

Don't know how much boost he was seeing on the pull

Notice he has a good bit of tq at mid range which I'd think would
be the result of the smaller Cobra intake

Then again ... Notice he doesn't pull quite as far as Jeff

Now ... Lets focus in on the three torque curves

I gotta tell you ... I planned and worked real hard on my low/mid range
so
I kinda used it as a gauge with other possibilites ;)

You can plainly see both Vortech combos here best my results :nice:

At 3250 Jeff has 12 on me and Shaun has a whopping 25 on me

I'll just say it like this ... I've looked at the low end tq curves of many typical
NA street car combos and I haven't seen many that make 300 by 3K

Matter of fact ... Lot of em don't even make it by 3500 :Word:

Now ... That may not make much difference to you
Your application or wishes may be different
but
Using the criteria of what I just said .......

Neither Vortech combo would cause a loss down low for me :nono:
and
At an rpm as early as 3250 ... A significant gain is seen

Now does the Vortech offer low and mid range like the KB ... NO
but
It is my thinking ... It ain't as bad as one would first suspect ;)

anyway .........

I thought you folks might want to see the new data I ran across :D

i took the car out yesterday and got into it for the first time since the 2.95pulley and the long tubes. it did make a big difference. the boost starts to kick in as low as 2500rpm, it just keeps building from there. left me grinning ear to ear :D

I keep finding more good Vortech dyno charts :nice:

I wanted to keep things as simple and un-cluttered as possible so I
put up separate charts for tq and hp

WiStang ... The newest victim to fall under our spot light :rlaugh:
is yet another Vortech blown combo

Notice it has no major combo parts that would be considered unusual

btw ... I forgot to include in the info ...The short block is OEM

Notice four things about this combo
1 Snow Meth Kit
2 Electric Water Pump
3 Street Heat Intake
4 T-56 Trans

1 This has to help ... no doubt about it
How much ... I can't say ... Those of you who can help here ... Speak Up :D
I'd have to wonder ... How reliable would this be on a Street Car

2 I can say for certain ... This will inflate the torque ALL ACROSS the rpm range
I can ALSO say it would not be all that reliable for a Street Car

3 This choice of intake should help down low and hinder up high
With the boost ... I'd think it would not be as pronounced as on NA combos

4 This trans will sap a bit more power than the typical t-5

Now ... Lets focus on the torque :)

Follow along here as we look at the rpm range in 250 rpm bites

2750 M368 W318 G298
3000 M373 W342 G305
3250 M380 W370 G312
3500 M388 W398 G314
3750 M392 W424 G312

I can only relate to what my car can do at this time
so
Here is the way I relate to these curves and what I expect will happen ;)

At a steady cruise in like 3rd or 4th at a rpm of like 2000 ..........
When I go WOT, I start to feel a pull at 2750 and it improves as rpm rises

As you can see ... I don't gain all that much in the 2750 to 3K range
however
The Vortech at 3K offers a gain of 37
and
The KB at 3K offers a gain of 68

At the 3K to 3250 range the KB does top out the Vortech by 10
however
When compared to my NA combo the looser Vortech ... has 58 over me

Now we come to the 3250 to 3500 range and it gets really interesting :D

Looking at both blown combos ...
You could say they are the same when you look at the average :)

You gotta see that that average is a WHOPPING 70 gain for me

The see-saw now flips over to the favor of the Vortech at 3500 to 3750

It bests the Kb by 32
and
It blows (;)) me away by a total amount of 112 :jaw:

WHAT AM I SAYING HERE

Yes when you look at a Vortech & KB side by side ... The KB is King down low

But ... When compared to my little NA combo ......
The looser of the above low end torque war ................
It offers a significant gain of LOW END torque for my current combo :hail2:

Hey ... Still crunching numbers and all
but
Looks like I've found a way ........
to have my cake and be able to eat it too

Last thing :)
but
Certainly not forgotten :nono:

You need no help from me to see what happens when you go past 3750 :rlaugh:

I await your Comments or Thoughts about all this :)
and
I'll be a watchin to see what ya'll got to say

Grady

What part isnt good for a street car? the meth kit or the other mods?

I'd not be comfortable with using the word ... Good

My two concerns were .....

The electric water pump
and
The kit used to inject a mist of water/methanol in the air stream

These would certainly be good to give a gain :nice:
but
Are they gonna be durable enough to give reliable service for a daily driver
or
A car that is used on bit less regular basis such as a weekend toy

I suspect both methods would be a high maintenance kinda thing
but
Those who have them in use ..............
We welcome your input here and you can tell us the straight story :D
