I always wondered if a BOV is applicable with a S/C...and is it really necessary?

thats a 36MM BOV and is designed for the "massive" amounts of air flow that the evo tubos can supply. And to compare, my BOV is 50MM . I think you should get something like mine...and it looks a HECK OF ALOT BETTER to boot

can you use BOV on SC cars. If not why only on turbo?

it depends on your MAF. on a draw thru setup you arent suppose to vent the air b/c it has already been metered, it should recirculate back to the intake after the MAF if you have a blow thru you can vent all the air to the atmosphere

The BOV is there really to protect the compressor against compressor surge when the throttle is slammed shut under boost (e.g. when shifting...) In this regard, they're as applicable in centrifugal SC apps as turbos.

just to let some of the "Dam i want a BOV sound everytime i shift too" guys know.

i had a 97 eclipse GST spyder. GST means its turbo+fwd, which sucks cause its fwd but still a fun car to mod and play around with.

after putting on a intake tube, you could hear the stock bov alot better. then i got the greddy type-s and it was uber loud, even recirculating(which you must recirc unless you have a blo-thru maf setup after the turbo before the throttle body). after about a month the sounds cool factor wore off. after a year i learnt how to shift without letting it go off, as not to hear it. after a year and a half, i sold the car. get my drift? aint as cool as everyone thinks.

might be different with the whine of a SC and one, but im sure the effect will be the same after driving for a bit and hearing this noise every ****ing time you change gears or back off the throttle.

Didnt think about that lol...hmm skipshift?

But in our defence those things have really small stock turbos that spool fast and very easy correct? I know one guy around town has like the same car, and man he can just shift at a pretty low RPM and the BOV would pop EASY.
My friend with the talon (.60 trim I belive) can drive all day long and not pop the thing off....it really wont BOV unless hes going WOT and shifts.

I hope mine is the same way...pops off when I want, but not durring normal driving to annoy me lol. Thanks for the heads up!

Here is what I got...but its pretty pricy. I think it was a little over $200 . This is what it looks like.

yes, a smaller turbo will spool easier which will mean more of a chance the bov has to let it out during shifts/decel.

i had an Evo 16G on the 97, and unless i was doing more than half throttle, it wouldnt get past -10hg and the bov wouldnt go off. or when i was getting on it and didnt want to hear it, before id shift, id slightly come off the gas so the load on the motor was taken up, and the pressure in the intake came down to 0, then id shift. usually did that to get ricers to try to run so they didnt get scared by the BOV. though that 16g was a pretty quick spooling turbo, especially when i had it port matched with my ported exhaust manifold, and even with a FMIC i could do 20psi by 3200rpm.

My buddy also has a 60trim, and doesnt even start to spool till 3k and hits full 20psi by 4500 on a good day. he drives all day and not a sound. dsm's have a 2.0l which hinders them from spooling larger than stock turbos until around 3.5-4k.

or you can have a SRT4 with the mopar bov(nicknamed the mopar riceplate) and you can blowoff just barely moving the car in gear in 1st like my other buddies. ****, its blown off while decelerating and downshifting. its sad. just has to do with the size of the turbo(super quick spooling with the 2.4 motor they have) and the sensitivity of the bov.

btw, Tial is an excellent brand. my next dsm will either be a tial or hks ssqv.
