Take it easy people!!! No matter which way you go it's going to cost alot of money. Take what you estimate you think it's going to cost you and double it.... that's what it's actually going to cost you in the end run.

well said even though my swap only cost me 199% of what i thought... but close :rlaugh:
I think i would go with the engine the way it is if i were you, but you better have money saved for all of the other necessary parts.

I caught the original post. Personally I dont believe in calling random people on a forum idiots or whatever.

Here is the part number for the painted headers at summit for $400. HOK-6224HKR

Cant we all just get along?

I dont want to get in a war and I will stay calm and polite.

Painted Headers for the 460 in a fox are $400. Carb and intake are about the same as a small block. Exhaust, tranny are similar costs. A hot 408 is going to shreda stock c4 or a T5. So no matter if you go big block or small, you have to factor tranny cost. Also a hot 408 is also going to need a healty exhaust, so again either engine choice this is money to spend.

A windsor based stroker and a 460 are both going to need brackets, so that again is a wash.

Radiator and such are going to need to be swaped to keep up with the new HP demands.

I personaly like a minimalist 460 idea, that is just me. My whole point is when comparing costs of a job compare apples to apples. Not 460s to stock 302's.
Let me rephrase. I wasn’t trying to come down on anyone who was for the idea. It was more a rebuttal to one Stangnet members initial unfounded lashing at Myself, Giddyup306 and Ray III’ for us even suggesting that this swap may take any kind of effort at all.

I for one think it would could make serious power, but not without cost…both in the handling dept and in the wallet. You can buy shorty headers for a small block considerably cheaper than 400.00 and I have never seen a set of headers for a B/B cheaper than $500.00. Yes, a 408 needs a healthy exhaust, but no less than a heavy breathing 460.

I used the Aluminum BB heads as an example because they were used in the previous argument to keep weight over the front end down. I’ve very aware that iron heads will make a very healthy engine as well, but it does nothing to solve the weight issue. It’s true that a built 351 based stroker will cost more, but a 302 based 331 or 347 is considerably cheaper than that and will still allow the reuse of most of the stock parts.

I’ve got nothing against being different, but sometime even being different has its disadvantages.

Just wanna know, why would he put a built 460 in a bronco?
If this doesn't make sense to anyone else tell me.
Mighta had some biiiiig tires to turn. Remeber, the small block 302/351 market hadn't really taken off until the early 90's. Before that the only alternative to boost or blower to get any kind of power was big block displacement. :nice:

Well to each his own, good luck! Don't bash a guy because he "wants" to do something. It's people like those bashing the idea of the 460 that never got society where it is today (many thanks to those that wanted to try something different and became what we call geniuses, mathematicians, scientists, inventors, and so on).

Mind you a 460 is a chore - but life is full of compromises. You NEVER get both of something and no concequence, it's always a trade. Yes gas mileage may go down, handling will be different, but the fun factor will go up, the rareity of a 460 as opposed to a 302, 306/308, 351, 408, and so on will have huge odds in the favor of the 460, and can you say torque monster? So what if people want what they want, it is what makes us what the dictionary would call individuals - life sucks when everything is the same! Variety is good, sure i'm sure all of us stangers still grin when we hear a really worked over 351 windsor, or just maybe a stock 289 classic, but why try and kill a dream if that is what it could be called by stating it's bad to be different? For me, I want a nicely restored fox with a few eye appeals and a nicely-done 351 cleveland - should I be criticized because parts for a cleveland are too rare or it being expensive? So be it - but it's still different from what most people do in the end. :spot:

Smock - "Hell the weight of an aluminum headed 460 is comparable to an iron headed 302."

Better check your weights Smock - you're WAY off on that one. Iron headed 302 in the 450-500 lb range. Even with aluminum heads, the 460's gonna top 650 lbs. Mustangs and Fords had an engine swap guide last month (I think?) and they listed the 429/460 motors at over 700 lbs. That must be quite a heavy supercharger you have on your 302.... :)

Oh - thanks for the heads up on the physical fit - I was under the impression that the strut towers had to be massaged for clearance. I'm wondering though, does the engine have to be positioned a bit further forward for bell housing/tunnel clearance - or is there enough room?

Yeah thats why Ford made the cleveland, small block with big block heads.
Just one problem, Ford forgot that the cleveland didn't made power unless you were at +5000rpms. :D

will this car have to pass emissions?? i dunno if i'd go slapping that engine into a daily driver, but then again i guess there are ways around it. i want to know how things turn out. it'll be a good $50 investment :-)

I'm not sure it this was suppose to be a shot at me, or not? Either way, I'm not trying to piss in anyone’s cornflakes here guys. Just keeping it real. It's definitely not a project for a beginner (or even moderately mechanically inclined) person on a limited budget to tackle.

Nah.. I think he was poking fun at all the needless rage directed towards you.
