Mach 1 Chin from Home Depot?

While i think it looks ok, i'm curious as to why every pic he took is from an above angle looking down at it. I'm curious as to how it looks standing 25 feet back shot from the front or the side or views where everyone will see.

All his photos are taken from bird eye views basically.

Oh i also drive my Mustang in the snow in New England. I've had the opportunity to use my "Mach 1 Snow Plow Spoiler" a few times! :)

Looks just fine to me? I've noticed a lot of people here will dismiss or frown upon anything home made or that doesn't cost an arm and a leg to build or buy, just because it’s not piece that was officially “sanctioned” for a Mustang. That’s fine….while they’re pissing away their money on high dollar stuff like that to give them that “official” piece of mine, I’ll use the money I save on something more worth while and continue to blow their doors off. :)

Actually it was more in reference to the fact that home weather stripping is very flexible (to keep a good seal), it however is not meant to have rocks and sand thrown at it nor constant abuse from road chemicals. I'd still be weary... plus... chances are after installing that, you can't go back and install the part that was made to fit.

I agree there are some things worth attempting, and while this one isn't overly harmful... look at the functional GT scoop thread in tech... as the most recent example of trying to save money.

I wasn't singling you out specifically and it's not that I'm trying to be a smart ass here, but what exactly do you think the term weather stripping refers to anyway? It's meant to protect whatever is behind it from the exact elements you stated. Who cares if it even only lasts even a single season? If it wears, or rots off, just unroll another 5-6ft and start all over again.

I really don't see the harm in using it anyway, since it's mostly a looks piece. I mean.....exactly how much protection from the elements do they really need to offer to begin with? None of the previous SN-95's had a chin spoiler until the introduction of the '03 Mach 1 anyway and they all did fine without them up until that point.

While I agree with you that some home made mods should be left to the rice crowd, I don't think ones like this should be dismissed so blatantly (again, not singling you out).

I remember a few years ago, I made a custom CAI out of 3" ABS pipe that drew cold air in from the inner fender through a giant K&N conical filter. I had it finished off with smoothed edges and painted up to the point where it looked better than factory and you couldn't even tell there were elbows on it. Everybody though it was great until I told them I had made it myself with parts from the hardware stored. Most of my friends laughed at me and told me how ghetto it was. Never mind that I had the fastest car of the bunch and for the least amount of money.

The funny thing was, that a couple years later, fender well CAI's became the hottest thing since sliced bread....and wouldn't you know it a few years after their introduction, the best kit available on the market today (JLT) just happens to be made of....you guessed it, ABS plastic that draws the air in from the inner fender well.

I’m really not sure where I was going with this rant, but I guess my point is, is just because something might be low tech, inexpensive or home made doesn’t mean it should be considered worthless, or the butt of everyone’s joke. Because someone out there might be patenting that particularly fruitless idea as we speak and will proceed to make a very tidy profit from it in years to come. After all….who’s the real fool? The one who comes up with and makes use of the stupid idea that everyone laughed at, or the one who waits for someone else to come up with it first, just to turn around and pay them top dollar to use it themselves later on down the line?

Weather stripping is used as a flexible seal between a moving part of a house or car. It does not keep anything out, it just lessens the ammount of crap that gets in. Wether it be a sliding window (house or car), a front door, a garage door, etc...

Its meant to be a replacable barrier in an area where a solid material can not be used as a gap fill.

Yes it will handle sun and water, but it is not made to be on the front of a car, it is not meant to handle the materials that DOT uses to keep the roads from icing up.

Trust me I work in the snow removal field, all the stuff we use tears seals up. Look at a county snow plow that hasn't been properly maintained... you will notice there are permanent wiper blade marks on the windshield, and the weather strip on the windows and doors will be pock marked or rotted through badly. Yes it will eventually eat plastic, but its more aggressive on soft rubber materials like wipers and seal.

Just trying to save some one some heart ache... If this is for a garage queen, great it will work fine. But for a 4 season stang it will not hold up.

*EDIT* The rest of your post however is very accurate, and something like the CAI you made is harmless and effective, unless of course they leave plastic shavings inside the tube.
