Arrrrrggghhh. I installed a Grant classic wood steering wheel and the cast Mustang horn "button" in my '68 Mustang. The steering wheel installation worked out fine, but the Mustang horn button is simply crazy.
Essentially, the separate instructions that come with the cast horn button say "throw out the spring, and put these three self-adhesive foam pads (about 3/8" square and a little less thick) between the two horn plates, then screw in the three shoulder bolts."
That worked okay, but funky, and the horn is now very sensitive...bumps in the road will set it off. I've tried loosening the bolts to just snug, but that induces a bit of slop between the contact plates and makes the problem worse. I've also tried adding a bit of self adhesive felt (those sticky green circles of felt you can put on the legs of the dining room chair to not scratch the hardwood floor), but no improvement.
Finally, the cast Mustang horn button is supposed to press fit on over the outer contact plate, just friction holding it on. No surprise, no matter how firmly I press the button on over the contact plate, it just dangles and eventually (again, bumps in the road) falls off.
Either this is the most poorly engineered horn button installation in the world, or I'm missing something obvious. Has anyone out there fought this battle before? (Pics available, if that will help).
Thanks.
