Might be picking up an 86 GT soon, currently has no cats. The seller is telling me that the car doesn't need them. I thought the car had to be older to be exempt from the sniffer test. Anyone know the cut off date, or know where to find it? The RMV site sucks.

The car will need them. As of now, older than 1984 doesn't get tested. The thing with the cats is a Federal EPA law - it doesn't matter if you get tested or not.....if the car came from the factory with cats, it's supposed to have cats on it. Period. But with that said, there are rumors flying around that sniffer testing for all pre-1996 cars will be going away sometime this year.....still just rumor, though.
