Mods = sell for less?

Not trying to flame anyone, just wanted to get a discussion started.

I think some folks are under the misconception that by modding the crap out of their ride, they can now command top dollar. While buying a car, especially sporty-ish cars, I'm very wary of a modded vehicle. *Generally*, those who mod, tend to drive their cars hard. Now, there may be a gearhead out there as pleased as punch to get the uber-modded car, but the car dealer won't give you anywhere near what you paid for mods.

I read somewhere (here, maybe?) that you're better off putting your car back to stock and selling the mods piece by piece. A pain in the butt? Sure, but you'll get way more for everything in the end.

Yeah, I dont think anyone wants my nitrous installed vert with a 6 point rollbar, no back seat, and a loud catless exhaust. Anything will sell better stock unless its a power adder like a turbo or supercharger, they can demand more money for their cars I would assume

that being said i agree. you generally get back half of what youve spent in mods. so if your car is worth 10k stock, and you have 10k in mods, you will have around a 15k car. people are very wary of buying modded cars for the reason that they dont know how they were driven.

The reason is not that a modded car is driven harder. The reason modded cars are worth less is because people want Mustangs built by Ford. Not ones built by Joe Douchebag in his dad's garage using an unknown level of skill and quality of parts.

Also, if you do have a heavily modded car you're right the dealer is gonna screw you. Best to do a private sale and wait for some clueless moron to pay top dollar for your franken-stang...

I look at it like this. If I'm shopping for a Mustang, Camaro, etc, I'm EXPECTING that it was beat on. They are muscle cars, that's just the way they are.

Secondly, mods don't depreciate the value if you do them tastefully. I.e., you guys who spend thousands on your suspension, and a forged bottom end, are going to get nothing out of that, because nobody cares, or can see it.

People with the mach 1 grill, aftermarket rims, a better stereo, and a perfect paint job are going to be the people who get their monies worth.

If you say so. Put 2k in suspension on a stock looking GT, and try selling it, and see how much more anyone's willing to pay.

Maybe I'm weird, but if I see a car with mods on it already I shy away from it. Me and my dad install everything on my car, so I know how and who does it and what kinda quality job is done. But I can't say that about buying a pre-modded car.
